Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Ray.
Hi Denise, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Denise Ray, founder of Mobile Spa Services. My roots in wellness began early. From walking on my father’s back after long shifts as a police officer, to massaging my mother’s feet and scalp when she needed comfort, I learned the power of healing touch long before I ever realized it was a gift.
As I grew older, that gift became a calling. After working several dead-end jobs, I knew I needed a meaningful career change. I walked into Orlando Technical College (formerly Westside Tech) intending to enroll in the LPN program — but when I stepped into the massage therapy classroom during the tour, something clicked. It felt intuitive, familiar, and aligned with who I had always been. Within just a few days, I shifted my entire career path.
I graduated at the top of my class and went on to build a strong foundation in the spa industry as a massage therapist, esthetician, nail technician, and spa manager. But during those years, I noticed a major gap: very few minority women were represented in leadership roles, and opportunities for advancement were limited. That realization stirred something in me.
Driven by faith and purpose, I stepped out to create the opportunity I wished had existed. I opened my first small, three-room spa in 2010 to provide space, training, and visibility for other minority women. It was a beautiful spa but in a poor location, and ultimately I chose to close it and continue my work as a mobile therapist.
After a difficult transition and a rebuilding season, Mobile Spa Services was officially born in 2014. By 2016, we began partnering with luxury resorts throughout Central Florida. Today, we deliver personalized, on-site wellness experiences to homes, vacation rentals, corporations, conventions, and high-end events — transforming any environment into a spa sanctuary.
My mission has always been the same: to make wellness accessible, intentional, and inclusive while creating opportunities for women who historically haven’t had them. Every challenge, every pivot, and every closed door shaped the business I now lead with gratitude and purpose.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building Mobile Spa Services has come with meaningful challenges, especially as a woman of color navigating an industry where access, visibility, and funding are not always equally available. One of the biggest hurdles was stepping out on my own without a roadmap or mentorship. I had to learn how to run a business, build systems, and market myself while managing day-to-day life.
When I opened my first three-room spa in 2010, it was beautiful inside but located in an area with very little foot traffic. Closing it was heartbreaking, but that experience became a turning point. It pushed me to reinvent my approach and ultimately led to the creation of Mobile Spa Services as a fully mobile wellness brand.
One of the biggest challenges was differentiating a true luxury mobile spa from basic contractor-style massage services. Major chains often send whoever is available, resulting in hit-or-miss service. I knew I wanted to set a higher standard in Central Florida — a refined, intentional, truly elevated mobile spa experience rooted in professionalism, ambiance, and consistent quality. Becoming a pioneer in this space required courage and a willingness to build something that didn’t yet exist.
Despite the obstacles, each challenge strengthened me. Those difficult seasons shaped the resilience, purpose, and vision that guide my business today.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I learned early the value of compassion, hard work, and caring for others. I was always the child who naturally gravitated toward helping people feel better—whether emotionally or physically—and that instinct to nurture has followed me throughout my life.
I was also a lover of music, art, and poetry. Creativity came naturally to me, and I often expressed myself through writing. I even won a few poetry contests in elementary and junior high school. Looking back, it makes sense—I’ve always been drawn to creating feeling, atmosphere, and connection.
Those early experiences shaped the way I show up in my work today. They taught me to focus not just on technique, but on creating an atmosphere of comfort, intention, and genuine care. And those values now help drive the strong, trusted, 5-star reputation Mobile Spa Services has built. They guide how I serve my clients, lead my team, and contribute to the community around me.
