Today we’d like to introduce you to Doris Whyte.
Hi Doris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and in 2023, I founded O.W.A.H LLC to make mental health care more accessible and stigma-free. Too often, people face barriers to support, from transportation and scheduling to fear of judgment, and I wanted to create a space that meets them where they are. O.W.A.H is a fully virtual psychotherapy practice that combines professional therapy with the added benefits of social work support, guiding clients through life’s challenges in a holistic and practical way.
The name O.W.A.H is deeply personal. It comes from my maiden name, and because of the pride I carry in my West African heritage, I wanted to honor my family’s legacy. With the help of my parents, siblings, my husband, and my niece, we created the acronym “Overall Wellness and Health.” It reflects both the mission of my practice and the sense of love, grounding, and support that my family embodies, a reminder that we are stronger together.
O.W.A.H LLC is still a fairly new practice, and we continue to grow, learning and adapting based on feedback from the individuals and families we serve. At O.W.A.H, LLC clients can safely explore challenges such as anxiety, trauma, and stress, with guidance designed to empower them to recognize their resilience and honor their whole selves. I draw inspiration from African proverbs I learned as a child, such as “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” “None of us is as smart as all of us,” and “A person is a person because of other persons.” These timeless words guide my work and serve as a constant reminder: healing and growth are strongest when we support one another.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to creating O.W.A.H LLC hasn’t been entirely smooth, but I understand that I’m not alone. Launching a virtual psychotherapy practice comes with unique challenges. from navigating technology and secure platforms to designing systems that feel both professional and welcoming, all while learning to balance growth with quality care. A lot of credit goes to every client who has joined and will join me on this journey. Their patience, empathy, and understanding that things aren’t perfect all the time make them feel more human, and they, in turn, inspire me. I like to imagine myself as a character in an anime, drawing strength from the people I help; with each positive impact, I feel powered up and motivated to keep growing, giving my best, and supporting individuals and families with care, dignity, and hope.
As you know, we’re big fans of O.W.A.H LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
O.W.A.H LLC is a fully virtual psychotherapy practice making mental health care accessible, flexible, and compassionate. I’m most proud of the foundation of O.W.A.H. the name, from my West African heritage, stands for “Overall Wellness and Health” and reflects our mission to promote resilience, growth, and wellbeing. Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My views on risk-taking have definitely evolved over the years, and I credit much of that growth to my husband — he’s taught me to embrace it, and I love it! I went from someone who always thought I was playing it safe to someone who now approaches life with intentional courage, realizing it often takes the same amount of energy either way.
To me, risk-taking is essential to growth and opportunity. Every day we step out the door or open our eyes, whether we like to admit it or not, we’re taking a risk. Choosing to take chances, whether in business, relationships, or personal growth, is what allows us to advance, learn, and truly live a fulfilled life. I’ve learned that if you let fear kill your dreams, it will haunt you, and nothing is more powerful than taking steps forward despite uncertainty. I believe that is what some may call faith. Ultimately, I believe that embracing risk is not reckless, but a conscious way to align your actions with your purpose and potential.
