Dr. Shaenor Ishmael

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a Maternal Mental Health Therapist, my journey into establishing my practice was profoundly shaped by my personal experiences as a mother. The challenges I encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic and the premature birth of my child at 27 weeks gestation, followed by an extended stay in the NICU, were pivotal moments that highlighted the emotional strain parents face in such circumstances. This realization led me to recognize a significant gap in support for women navigating this difficult journey of the perinatal period (before, during and after pregnancy).

Moved by the emotional turmoil and stress experienced by parents in the NICU, I felt a strong urge to make a difference. Drawing on my background in mental health therapy, I chose to create a niche as a maternal mental health therapist, understanding firsthand the unique challenges that mothers face during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

My personal journey through motherhood, particularly the challenges surrounding my youngest child’s NICU stay, inspired me to develop resources like the NICU journal (You and I: A NICU Journal). These resources were created to provide practical support for parents coping with the stress and uncertainty of the NICU experience, recognizing the value of such assistance during my own challenging times.

For me, my practice is more than just a profession; it is a passion derived from my own experiences and victories as a mother. My ultimate goal is to establish a nurturing environment where women feel supported, understood, and empowered to prioritize their mental well-being during one of the most transformative phases of their lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Establishing my practice has been a rewarding yet challenging journey. While the passion and drive behind my work have been unwavering, the road to where I am today has not always been smooth.

One of the significant struggles I faced was navigating the complexities of starting a specialized practice in maternal mental health. This involved not only establishing the necessary professional credentials and expertise but also building a reputation and client base in a niche field that is often overlooked.

Additionally, balancing the demands of running a practice with personal responsibilities, especially as a mother myself, presented its own set of challenges. Finding the right balance between providing quality care to my clients and taking care of my own well-being has been an ongoing process of learning and adjustment.

Moreover, raising awareness about the importance of maternal mental health and the services I offer has been a continuous effort. Overcoming stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health, particularly in the context of motherhood, has required perseverance and dedication.

Despite these challenges, each hurdle has provided an opportunity for growth and learning. By staying committed to my vision and remaining resilient in the face of obstacles, I have been able to overcome challenges and continue to make a positive impact in the lives of the mothers and families I serve.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

My services aim to help mothers navigate the complexities of motherhood, address issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and adjustment difficulties, and empower them to prioritize their mental well-being.

One of the key aspects that I am most proud of brand-wise is the tangible support resources I have developed, such as the NICU journal and my online course, to assist parents coping with the stress and uncertainty of the NICU experience. These resources, born out of my own journey and struggles, have proven to be invaluable tools in helping families navigate challenging times.

I want your readers to know that my brand is not just a service provider but a compassionate partner on the journey of motherhood. What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is going to the beach with my family. Those moments felt magical, filled with joy and the simple pleasures of being together. The beach became a space of adventure, laughter, and cherished family bonds that I still hold dear today.
