Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Gonzalez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Miami, and honestly, I’ve always been a really curious person. I liked figuring out how things worked, I just didn’t know at first that curiosity would lead me into tech.
Before all of this, I was working in hospitality. It was fast-paced and taught me a lot about people, but I remember constantly thinking, “There has to be something more.” One day I just decided to listen to that feeling. I quit my job with no plan, no backup, just faith that I’d figure it out.
That season was scary but also life-changing. I started learning how to code from scratch with no fancy setup, just YouTube tutorials, late nights, and a lot of Googling error messages. There were moments I wanted to quit, but somewhere along the way I fell in love with the process. It wasn’t just about learning code; it was about learning who I was becoming through it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way?
The hardest part was honestly trusting myself enough to start. When you come from a nontraditional background, it’s easy to feel like you don’t belong in tech. There were so many nights I questioned if I was good enough or if I was just wasting time.
But every little win built confidence finishing a project, solving a bug, understanding something that once confused me. Those moments reminded me that progress is still progress, even when it’s slow.
I also had to learn how to take breaks and protect my peace. In tech, it’s so easy to burn out trying to “keep up,” but I’ve learned that rest is also part of growth. You don’t need to have it all figured out, you just need to keep showing up.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about what you’re doing today?
Today, I’m a QA Software Developer and the creator behind my YouTube channel, Genesis-io. It’s where I share real, honest videos about tech, not just tutorials, but personal experiences, helpful advice, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
I talk about things like how to stay motivated when you feel stuck, dealing with imposter syndrome, and finding your confidence when you’re starting from zero. My goal is to make tech feel less intimidating and more human to show that you can come from anywhere and still build a life you love through learning and persistence.
I also share bits of my everyday life, creativity, routines because I want people to see that you can love tech and still be yourself. You don’t have to fit a mold to belong here.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, or resources that have helped you along the way?
Definitely. I’m a big believer in learning from everything: books, people, and experiences.
Some of my favorites:
• “A Mind for Numbers” by Barbara Oakley — for learning how to actually learn.
• “The Mountain Is You” by Brianna Wiest — for personal growth and emotional awareness.
• “Deep Work” by Cal Newport — for focus and discipline when you’re building something from scratch.
And honestly, YouTube has been one of my biggest teachers. That’s why I started Genesis-io to pay that forward and be the voice I wish I had when I was starting out.
