Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarely Jones
Jarely, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became a small business owner because there was a need in our community for a space where curly-haired people could receive excellent services and education on proper haircare. With the natural haircare movement booming over the last 15 years, I saw that it left people needing help on how to properly take care of their hair—especially young people and parents.
I grew up as the only curly-haired kid in my family. My mom relaxed my hair, and it was a disaster. I blow-fried my hair until just after high school, when I finally started embracing my curls. After getting a few bad haircuts, I decided to try to fix it myself. When I successfully fixed my hair, I realized I could do the same for other curly-haired people.
I wanted to enter the cosmetology industry to be a solution to a problem I saw in the community—one that I had personally experienced. And my dream has become a reality. Over the last 9 years, our salon has served thousands of women, men, and children with curly hair. Now, I am pivoting my role from hairstylist to educator and innovator by teaching and creating more resources for curly-haired people.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not. The largest struggle that comes to mind is this: A few years ago, I had a strategic business plan for expanding the salon. I wanted to serve more of the naturally curly community and train stylists to offer specialized curly hair services. But a week after I signed the lease, I found out I was pregnant. At that time, I was the sole owner of the salon and the main stylist. For two years, I had to juggle caring for my son while continuing to see clients, train stylists, and keep the salon operations going to avoid forfeiting the lease.
Another challenge has been my health. As many stylists know, standing all day can take a toll on your body. For me, it had taken such a toll on my legs that I needed surgery on both of them. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and very helpful.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Faith in Curls is a specialty curly hair salon that serves clients with natural curly hair. We offer everything from curly cuts, washes, and styles to curly color services and head spa treatments designed specifically for curly hair.
One thing that sets us apart from other salons is that we are fully dedicated to curly hair—including wavy and coily hair! All of our services are tailored to the curly hair community, which has often been misunderstood in the beauty industry. All of our staff members have curly hair too, so we understand both the struggles and the beauty that come with having curly hair. With that, we pride ourselves on educating everyone who sits in our chairs. We believe that every client deserves to know how to take care of their hair and achieve beautiful results at home. That’s what keeps our clients coming back.
One thing I’m proud of is that Faith in Curls has been able to influence the curly hair community in Central Florida. So many people have been inspired by our work. Some clients no longer believe they have to straighten their hair to look good, and some have even gone on to earn cosmetology degrees and start their own curly hair salons. It’s been amazing to see the impact of people fully embracing who they are.
We also want to continue building and empowering the curly hair community. Our salon hosts specials, deals, raffles, and events each month that help foster that sense of community! Readers can find out more on our Instagram, @faithincurlssalon, or on our website at faithincurls.com.
What’s next?
As I mentioned before, I’ve stepped away from hairstyling to focus on education and innovation. On the education side, I’ve created a full-length online course for stylists who want to learn how to work with curly hair. The course is available at artofcurls.academy.
On the innovation side, I’ve started selling hair accessories designed specifically for people with curly hair, which can be found at faithincurls.com and thecurlypineapples.com. I’m also working on something very special for the curly hair community that I haven’t shared with the public yet. But I can promise—it’s going to be great and will meet a huge need!
