Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Adames.
Hi Joseph, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey with dogs really began during my time in the Navy, where I became a Military Working Dog (MWD) Handler. Those eight years were transformative—I was stationed in Bahrain and Japan, working alongside three incredible MWD partners who taught me just as much as I taught them. We conducted anti-terrorism operations, explosive and narcotic detection, and countless other missions where precision, trust, and communication weren’t just important—they were life-saving.
What I loved most about that work was seeing how these dogs could be trained to perform at such an elite level while still maintaining their individual personalities and drive. Each of my three partners (Bubba, Haro, & Jjedi) had their own unique strengths and quirks, and learning to adapt my training approach to bring out the best in each of them really shaped my philosophy about dog training.
When I transitioned out of the Navy, I knew I wanted to continue this passion in the civilian world, but I also knew I had a lot to learn about working with family pets versus working dogs. The stakes and environment are completely different! So I immersed myself in studying with some of the top leaders in the dog training industry. I worked with everything from aggressive pet dogs that families were struggling with, all the way to government contract working dog sales—really the full spectrum of canine behavior and training.
That’s actually how Tropical K9 Academy was born. I realized there was this gap between the high-level training techniques I’d learned in the military and what most pet owners had access to. Families were dealing with dogs they loved but couldn’t manage, and traditional training methods weren’t always cutting it. I wanted to bring that same level of precision and results-oriented approach to everyday dog owners, but in a way that strengthened the bond between them and their pets.
Continuing education has always been huge for me. The dog training world is constantly evolving, and I never want to be that trainer who gets stuck in one method or mindset. Whether it’s attending seminars, working with other professionals, or learning about new behavioral research, I’m always looking to expand my toolkit. That way, when a client comes to me with a challenge, I can pull from this deep well of experience and knowledge to find the right solution for their specific situation.
What really drives me now is seeing those “aha” moments—when an owner finally connects with their dog in a way they never thought possible, or when a dog that was headed to a shelter because of behavioral issues becomes a beloved family member again. That’s the magic that keeps me passionate about this work every single day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road! Transitioning out of the military is already a huge challenge, even under the best circumstances. I did all the planning and research I could possibly do, mapping out my post-military career and how I wanted to build my dog training business. But nobody could have predicted the full gravity of Covid hitting right when I processed out of the Navy.
I left active duty right before the major shutdowns went into effect, which completely derailed my carefully laid-out plan. Suddenly, the world looked entirely different than what I had prepared for, and I had to pivot quickly while navigating this massive life transition.
The early days of building Tropical K9 Academy brought their own unique set of challenges that you don’t really anticipate until you’re in the thick of it. Going from working with highly trained military dogs to helping families with pets who have behavioral issues was a completely different ballgame.
Suddenly I’m dealing with dogs who’ve never had any structure, anxious owners who are at their wits’ end, and having to translate complex training concepts into something accessible for everyday families.
I’ve had to learn how to handle difficult conversations with clients whose dogs have severe aggression issues, navigate the emotional roller coaster that comes with helping families who are considering rehoming their beloved pets, and build systems that could adapt to whatever trials came next. Each challenge taught me something valuable and made me more passionate about helping owners build stronger relationships with their dogs.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tropical K9 Academy?
Tropical K9 Academy is a comprehensive dog training company based in Ocala, Florida, proudly serving all of Central Florida and beyond. If you want to work with us, we want to work with you, regardless of your location. We specialize in training everything from energetic puppies to seasoned adult dogs, covering the full spectrum of basic and advanced obedience, behavioral modification, and reactivity issues.
But here’s what really sets us apart—we don’t just teach your dog to sit, stay, and come on command in a sterile training environment. We focus intensively on applying all of your dog’s newfound skills to your actual daily life.
Yes, obedience commands are impressive, but we’re passionate about putting those skills to the test under real-world distractions, whether that’s walking past other dogs at the park, staying calm when guests arrive at your home, or maintaining focus during the chaos of everyday family life.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is that we’ve become more than just a training facility—we’re a community hub where knowledge and expertise are shared freely. Our clients often tell us they’ve tried other trainers before, but what they appreciate most is our practical approach combined with genuine care for both the dogs and their families. We’re not just changing behaviors—we’re transforming relationships and giving families the tools they need to enjoy life with their four-legged family members for years to come.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to find a good mentor, and I can’t stress this enough because it can be incredibly challenging in our industry. The dog training world is fascinating because it’s simultaneously very wide and very specific at the same time. You need to find someone who’s not only willing to help you with your specific goals but who will also push you to be better than you think you can be.
I’ve been fortunate to meet people in this industry who still surprise me to this day with their knowledge, creativity, and different approaches to working with dogs. What I wish I had known starting out is that there’s no single “right” path into this field, and that diversity of experience is actually a huge strength. I’ve met groomers who became explosive detection dog handlers and pet trainers who specialize in working with dogs on commercial and movie sets.
The other thing I wish someone had told me early on is that your military or professional background is valuable, but don’t let it limit your thinking about what’s possible in the civilian dog world. Be humble enough to learn from everyone—the seasoned trainer who’s been working with aggressive dogs for twenty years or the pet owner who’s figured out something brilliant with their own dog.
The business side is just as important as the training side, so don’t neglect learning about marketing, client communication, and building systems that can scale. Most importantly, be patient with yourself and the process. Building a reputation and a client base takes time, and every “failure” or difficult case is actually teaching you something that will make you better for the next client. The dog training industry needs passionate, dedicated people who are willing to keep learning and growing, so don’t be discouraged by the challenges—embrace them as part of your journey.
