Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Meyer.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Before law school, I worked as a freelance writer – I was published in newspapers and magazines. I attended William and Mary School of Law, the nation’s oldest law school, and after I graduated, I had the opportunity to work with my father. I felt this was a chance that I couldn’t pass up. We moved back to New York, where both my wife and I are from, and my father and I ran a law practice. Four years ago, my family made the decision to move to Orlando to be closer to my wife’s family, and I started my own solo practice. As luck would have it, there was an attorney right next door to me and we became friends. Eventually, we decided to merge and form Rosenthal Meyer, PLLC.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Running a law practice has not always been smooth – my biggest struggle has and continues to be marketing. Putting myself out there isn’t the most natural thing for me, and I never liked selling or talking about myself. I have had to work hard to really put myself out there and build my network. However, having built that network (twice – once when I was in New York, and again when I moved to Orlando), it has proven an invaluable resource. One struggle that surprised me was building a working relationship with my father. It required each of us to view the other differently and we had to adapt. Disagreements at work had to stay at work – we tried very hard not to bring anything home, especially if we were together on the weekend. In the end, it added a new depth to our relationship, but it took some ironing out.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rosenthal Meyer?
We are a law firm that handles estate planning, such as wills, trusts, and advance directives; business law; real estate and title; probate; and Medicaid planning. It is run by myself and my partner, Matt Rosenthal. What sets us apart is our personal touch on every file – we work with the clients, not paralegals, and no secretaries. We keep tabs on everything. We also work hard to be connected to the communities where we live and work. It is important to us that we are part of the community, not just being in it. We get to know other local business owners and help them. Our firm is in the business of helping people. Whether that help is in starting or growing a business, planning for their family’s future, or helping them to buy or sell a home, we not only help them get to their goal, but work as partners towards it. Our client’s goals are our goals.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be deliberate in your networking. I am a big advocate for the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce, where I am an ambassador. Too many people come to an event and assume they will get business just because they came. You need to follow up with the people that you meet, and you need to learn about them. It’s not just about how they can help you – you need to learn how you can help other people. Some of my best networking experiences were times when I didn’t say anything at all. You follow up and sell yourself that way. To find a mentor, I am a bit proponent of the “just ask” mentality. The worst thing they can say is no. However, you want to be deliberate and find a good mentor – not just someone who is knowledgeable, but someone who is a good fit. Go out for coffee, or meet for dinner once or twice. It’s almost like dating – you want to make sure you will get along before committing to each other.
