Community Highlights: Meet Karen Garcia Springer of Kanela handmade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Garcia Springer.

Karen , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Colombia, moved to Costa Rica with my family at age 17. I went to college in Costa Rica with a Bachelor’s in Journalism concentrated in Communication and Marketing. Right now I am on Shelter Island NY a beautiful touristic place very busy in the summer and desolated in the winter I started to work in a restaurant May through Oct, however in the winter I didn’t have a lot of work so I started to make macrame jewelry and summer bags and when I got pregnant with my first child in 2015 I decided to open a retail store with handmade products, I participate in craft shows in the Hamptons and this is going to be my fourth year in the farmers market in the historical society on Shelter Island. At the same time, I was growing my retail business, in 2016 when I have my second child, I also decide to get my real estate license in NY. Specializing on Shelter Island I couldn’t be happier here. I love to work with this small community when everybody knows each other I am very happy with the support of the community of Shelter Island.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
-The language my first language is Spanish -try to be accepted with the community I always had to introduce myself making sure to say my husband’s last name
-For my background, I didn’t know what to do in this country especially on Shelter Island when the majority of the jobs are in the restaurants and hotels business.
-Keep it up with my two businesses and taking care of my kids

We’ve been impressed with Britt Company in retail in Costa Rica, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When I graduate us a journalist, I was working in radio and at the same time working for my parents’ business in Costa Rica

After this I started to work as a manager for Britt Company in retail in Costa Rica, Peru and Chile and trained new employees, I
did it for 5 years. Until I decide to come to USA like an Au Pair

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That I started from nothing in this country.

My brand is helping many small artisans, Moms to grow their business, I also work with the indígenas in Colombia
