Community Highlights: Meet Keshia Lockett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keshia Lockett.

Hi Keshia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I was in high school, I would tell anyone I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and work in Labor and Delivery. I would watch the birth story on TV everyday when I came home. I was so fascinated with birth. In 2015, I started to pursue a career in nursing but something didn’t feel right. At that time, I was following another doula online and I remember always being intrigued by what she would post. One day she was talking about what kind of training to choose and that’s when It clicked that I could get into this field outside of nursing. After I did an online search, I found Dona international and I registered for a class and the rest is history.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Lol, I wish! It definitely wasn’t an easy journey. The process of finding myself and how I fit into this doula world was a journey. In the beginning, after being trained, I would work odd jobs just to survive. At the same time, I was trying to build my business and gain more clientele. I wanted people to know who I was and I’m still doing that. Even though I’m still not where I want to be I’m so much more closer than I would’ve imagined in the beginning.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a certified birth and postpartum doula, certified breastfeeding counselor, certified placenta specialist, Childbirth Educator, and author. I also have my very own podcast, Empowered Black Doula, where I bring on special guests to talk about all things related to pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding. I am mostly known for being a black doula in Orlando, Florida. Many moms find me because they are looking for a black doula that looks like them. I am proud of the social media presence I’m building. I want other readers to know that I really take what I do seriously. Hiring me as your doula you’re hiring someone that is 100 percent on your team.

I am there to help make your birth experience what you imagined while also providing education along the way. I offer in person childbirth education series every other month in Baldwin park. My classes prepare you for pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding. You get the opportunity to gear yourself with the information needed to go into your birth space informed. Childbirth education is not only essential but it’s an important part of your pregnancy.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Definitely! I see myself doing more public speaking engagements where I’m able to empower more women across the world. Our bodies are truly amazing and capable of moving mountains when we are presented with the right resources. I also see myself being well known in orlando and maybe even training other Doulas to help push forward change needed to help how women/birthing people give birth.
