Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashonda Geffrard.
Hi Lashonda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in the pet industry began fresh out of high school when I started working as a professional groomer. What started as a simple career quickly became a calling. Over the past 20yrs, I built businesses, served pet families, advocated for animal welfare, and developed a deep understanding of how the industry worked and who it often left behind. As I grew in my career, I noticed a troubling reality. Talented Black entrepreneurs, industry professionals, and leaders were creating incredible businesses and making meaningful contributions to the pet industry, yet many lacked access to the mentorship, resources, community and the opportunities needed to thrive. I knew there had to be a better way. Rather than waiting for change, I decided to help create it.
In 2021, I founded the Black Pet Business Network (BPBN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Black entrepreneurs, professionals, and nonprofit leaders throughout the pet industry. My vision was bigger than creating another networking group. I wanted to create a place where Black excellence in pet care could be celebrated and supported.
Today, BPBN has grown into a national movement focused on economic empowerment, mentorship, leadership development, representation, and creating pathways to opportunity for Black founders and Leaders in the Pet and Animal industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building something that didn’t already exist came with its own challenges. There was no blueprint for what I was creating, and often I found myself navigating unfamiliar territory while carrying the responsibility of serving a community that deserved more opportunities and representation.
There were moments of self-doubt, limited resources, and doors that didn’t always open easily. But each challenge reinforced why this work matters. I realized that if I was feeling those barriers, other Black founders were experiencing them too.
What helped me push forward was understanding that courage is not the absence of fear. It’s choosing to move forward despite it. Over time, I learned to trust my experience, embrace my voice, and recognize that my perspective was not a limitation, but a strength.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I’m most proud of is that BPBN has become more than an organization. It is a community where people are seen, valued, and have the opportunity to connect.
Whether you’re launching your first product, growing an established business, leading a nonprofit, or looking to expand your professional network, there is a place for you within BPBN.
