Community Highlights: Meet Maddy Owens of Fit ‘N Fierce of West Orange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddy Owens.

Hi Maddy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Fit ‘N Fierce of West Orange started from a deep belief that fitness should feel like belonging – not a chore, not intimidating, and definitely not exclusive. With over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry, I know that real transformation happens when people feel empowered, welcomed, and part of something bigger. I realized that most boutique studios niche down so much that they unintentionally exclude people, so I set out to build a fitness community that offers more styles, more support, and more heart.

Fit ‘N Fierce was started with one vision: to create a fitness collective that’s inclusive, flexible, and rooted in real community. We offer everything from resistance training to dance fitness, Pilates, barre, and more – all in welcoming, kid-friendly spaces around West Orange County. No contracts, no pressure, just a whole lot of sweat, support, and strength.

Now, over a year later, we’re growing, hosting challenges and theme nights, collaborating with other local movers and shakers, and building something truly special. It’s not just about getting fit, it’s about getting fierce, together.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all! But every bump in the road has made the mission stronger.

Starting Fit ‘N Fierce was exciting, but also terrifying. I launched without business loans or grants, and I completely depleted my savings to bring the vision to life. Every dollar counted and every decision made had to be strategic in order for me to hold true to our “people over profits” mission. I’ve had to wear every hat – coach, marketer, admin, custodian, community builder – and balance it all while showing up at 4:30 AM with full energy and intention.

Just one week after our grand opening, I found out that I’d need to find entirely new spaces to rent. It was a curveball I didn’t see coming, and I had to learn how to pivot fast. An even bigger struggle has been visibility and growth on a tight budget. Competing with big-box gyms and well-funded studios isn’t easy, especially when you’re building something grassroots. Our current rate of growth isn’t aligning with our ability to support it. We don’t yet have the client volume to cover expenses, and without the necessary funds, we can’t hire the team we need to provide the level of service our community deserves.

There were moments when I questioned everything. But what kept me going was my faith and the community that formed around the mission. The clients who have personal struggles and found a home away from home. The energy, the love, the transformation. It reminded me that this isn’t just a business, it’s a collective.

It’s still not always smooth, but I’ve learned to treat every challenge like a workout rep – hard, necessary, and part of getting stronger.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fit ‘N Fierce of West Orange?
Fit ‘N Fierce of West Orange is more than a fitness program, it’s a community-driven movement built on sweat, strength, and real connection. We offer the most diverse fitness program than any other boutique fitness studio in Florida. But what truly sets us apart is the way we blend affordability, flexibility, and personal connection in a space where everyone feels welcome.

We bridge the gap between gym memberships and personal training with a unique coaching model that combines group workouts with one-on-one guidance and nutrition support – all without contracts or pressure. We operate in rented studio spaces across West Orange County to stay accessible, mobile, and community-rooted. Many of our classes are kid- and stroller-friendly, because we believe in making fitness work for real life.

We’re known for remembering every client’s name, celebrating every win, and making everyone feel like they belong, regardless of their fitness level.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve stayed true to our values: people over profits, community over competition, and empowerment over ego. This isn’t about chasing a certain look – it’s about showing up, moving with intention, and getting stronger in every way.

I want your readers to know: If you’ve ever felt out of place in a gym, overwhelmed by fitness culture, or just in need of a fresh start with a crew that’s got your back – Fit ‘N Fierce is for you.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One of the greatest resources that fuels me, especially through the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, is the Bible. This journey with Fit ‘N Fierce of West Orange has required so many leaps of faith. There were moments I didn’t have a Plan B, just a promise that if I stayed faithful, it would all come together.

Verses like Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”, have been my anchor. I’ve read it with tears in my eyes after depleting my savings and watching my rent multiply by four. But I didn’t give up. I kept sowing seeds.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds me to trust beyond what I see. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” And that’s exactly what Fit ‘N Fierce has been built on: trust, obedience, and passion.

I didn’t launch this business because everything was perfect. I launched it because I felt called. There was a need for a space that was accessible, inclusive, rooted in real community – not contracts. A place where people of all fitness levels could feel strong, supported, and seen. And I knew I couldn’t do that alone. I had to trust that if I stayed aligned with my purpose, the people would come. And they have.

Hebrews 11:1 says “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” That’s the heartbeat of my brand. We’re here for the people who are ready to believe in something bigger: a healthier lifestyle, a more empowered version of themselves, a supportive fitness family that actually sees them.

Whether I’m coaching a client through their first class or showing up to a community event on two hours of sleep, my faith keeps me going. It shapes how I lead, how I serve, and how I keep showing up even when it’s hard. Fit ‘N Fierce isn’t just a fitness brand – it’s a faith walk. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
