Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Geraghty.
Maggie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
A lifetime resident of lady lake, I currently serve as the executive director of the Lady Lake Historical Society Museum. My journey with the museum began about 5 years ago as a volunteer, fueled by educating others on our area’s rich history. I am currently seeking to further my service to Lady Lake as a candidate for Lady Lake Commissioner.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Recruiting volunteers and attracting new visitors has proven challenging. During my years as a volunteer docent, I’ve developed an understanding of this unique museum and community. I believe community engagement with history is vital and I’m dedicated to finding stories that resonate with visitors of any age or background.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lady Lake Historical Society. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the executive director of the Lady Lake Historical Society & Museum. We are a local history museum located just off of 441 in Lady Lake. We share Veterans Park with a historic WPA built log cabin. Our building is the original train depot of Lady Lake built in 1883. We showcase the citrus industry, pioneer families and their way of life, and local railroad history. We have partnered with The VIllages Railroad club to depict Lady Lake in the 1940’s and 50’s in a HO scale model railroad. We have tried to make our museum as welcoming as possible to all. We enjoy groups from assisted living homes as well as daycares and homeschool groups. We have something to interest all members of your party.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We work with other local museums to share ideas. We are always looking for volunteers to join us, even a few hours a month or special events. We would really just appreciate a visit to see this beautiful museum and spread the word to anyone you think may enjoy us as well. We partner with the Villages Railroad club to provide and volunteer in our train room.
