Community Highlights: Meet Marquis “Mac” Ross of Frugal House Nursery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquis “Mac” Ross.

Hi Marquis “Mac”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
2018 A simple lemon tree was planted and in three years have turned into over 300 personal plants. I needed a hobby to help clear my head since being run over in 2016, then emergency surgery a year later. My old life was motorcycle riding but that was clearly out of the picture because of my busted leg. After my family bought a house in 2018, my friend got me interested in lemon trees and it was full sprint from there. I now have various citrus trees, fruit vines, herbs, succulents, shrubs, vegetables, and other forms of produce. I knew I needed a hobby that I couldn’t rush and that’s why I chose to grow all my personal plants from seed because there is no way you are going to rush Mother Nature.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had my ups and downs for sure, but it made me more determined than anything. My biggest struggle so far has been growing tomatoes, I tried for years, all varieties and different times of the year, but would always end the season with no tomatoes. On my third attempt this year, I finally got them after changing up two things. Now we have a freezer shelf fool and I have my tomato growing process.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Frugal House Nursery specializes in succulents, shrubs and a variety of herb and vegetable seedlings and our most popular product is aloe. Authenticity sets us apart from others and what I am most proud of brand-wise. Frugal House Nursery we want our plant fam to be comfortable, so don’ be afraid to ask questions because we all started somewhere.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My view on risk taking is that it is necessary. I often take risks and get rewarded heavily or knocked down hard. I will never be forced to say, “I should have tried this” and I thank my risk taking attitude for that.
