Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – To start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Matthew, and I own 821 Auto Spa Mobile Detailing. I was born in the Bronx, NY, raised in Eastern North Carolina, and Live in Orlando, Florida. We provide supreme mobile car detailing to the Orange County area. The company’s name, “821,” honors my daughter Rylee’s birthday (August 21). I’ve been in the detailing business since 2005. I was 16 with my first car, the 1986 Plymouth Gran Fury. I used to keep every inch of that car from front to back to under the hood to the trunk spotless almost every day. That’s when my passion for detailing started, and understanding the difference between a car wash and a detail. Before beginning on 821 Auto Spa, I had three other businesses: a trucking company, which I kept so clean you had to take your shoes off to get inside my 18-wheeler; a commercial cleaning company, which we cleaned businesses and beach houses, and a clothing company which I made me and everyone look clean who wore my brand. Cleanliness is next to Godliness; my company is built on that statement’s history and facts.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The detailing business has been a smooth road, to be honest. There’s very low overhead. You’re just selling hard and skilled work. As long as you work on your craft daily and research products, techniques, and marketing, you will grow as big as you want in this business. Don’t ever feel like you know it all. I learn something new almost every day. You can get this business with as little as $500-$1000. The more start-up capital, the better, but you can get your foot in the door with that. The biggest struggle for me is the sun and the heat, but you cannot do much about that.
