Hi Mayeling, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started as a solo mental health practitioner in Orlando, FL. I was renting office space from a friend of mine in the Dr Phillips area as she encouraged me to build my own private practice. I remember feeling so nervous with limiting beliefs that I was not good enough, I was not going to make a living and that I had to devalue myself in order to be worth it. In the midst of these thoughts, I decided to push through and believe that it will happen and that everything will be okay. I created a corporation and in faith I leased my private counseling practice. After a year in practice the pandemic hit and that is when the business really took off. I was not able to keep up with the growth so I decided to expand and hire clinicians. Today the practice has 6 clinicians providing mental health counseling services throughout Central Florida,
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I tend to focus on the journey and not the outcome. So, yes, I have had many struggles along the way and many lessons learned. I would say the biggest lesson is how to navigate difficult personalities within the practice. I am an expert in dealing with clients’ struggles and personalities but when it came to the practice I had a lot to learn.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is to pay attention to personality types. Knowing the personalities of your staff is essential for fostering a cohesive and harmonious workplace culture. By understanding each team member’s unique characteristics, communication styles, and preferences, leaders can tailor their approach to better suit individual needs and create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. This understanding allows for more effective teamwork, as it encourages employees to appreciate each other’s strengths and perspectives, leading to improved collaboration and problem-solving. Additionally, recognizing and respecting personality differences can help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts, ensuring a more positive and productive workplace. Ultimately, when staff members feel seen and appreciated for who they are, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and committed to the organization’s goals.
