Community Highlights: Meet Megan Farrell of MF Nutrition & Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Farrell.

Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Back in 2021, I had gained a decent amount of weight & was really uncomfortable in my body. There is so much conflicting information online about weight loss and leading a healthy lifestyle that it was challenging to know what was legit and what was BS. I had tried every “diet” in the book and I really just wanted to work with a professional to take the guesswork out of it for me so I hired an online health & fitness coach. At the time, the cost for the coach was as much as my car payment but it was something that was really important to me so I took the leap & made the investment in myself. Thank god I did because it was the best decision I have ever made. Not only did I lose over 30lbs but I’ve maintained that weight loss for 4+ years now and I’m more confident and happier than ever. This is what really started my passion for health and fitness. This experience made such a positive impact not only on my health but my life in general. Becoming a better version of myself bled into all aspects of my life, making me a better friend, partner, coworker, etc.

Having such a positive experience of my own fueled my passion for helping other achieve the same thing. If I could even make a fraction of the impact on someone’s life that my coach made on mine, I would consider that a win. While working my full-time engineering job, I picked up a part-time role with the original coaching company I worked with to help conduct client consultation calls. This fueled my passion even more, leading me to get my personal training certification in 2023 & start working with a few online clients on the side.

After dedicating essentially my entire life to my corporate engineering job over the years, traveling Monday to Friday, 3 weeks out of the month for months on end, I had officially burnt myself out. In the back of my head, I had always wanted to pursue health and fitness full-time and now felt like the only time in my life I might really have the chance to do it. After a LOT of phone calls with friends and family and many, many, tears shed, I officially quit my comfortable, stable, corporate job, with no real plan in place. I’m pretty sure everyone thought I was crazy – I definitely thought I was crazy.

I took a little bit of time off to recover from corporate burn out and then threw myself head first into health and fitness. I started working as an in person personal trainer, doing online personal training for a dietician, starting my own online health and fitness business, and waiting tables at a restaurant to help make ends meet. Needless to say, I went from working endlessly at my corporate job to now working 4 different jobs to pay the bills but I always say choose your hard. Nothing is going to be easy & work is work so chose something that at the end of the day make you happy & you find fulfilling.

The end goal is to be able to pursue my own business full-time. Last year I started MF Nutrition and Fitness, an online health and fitness company that provides online 1:1 coaching to help people all over the world achieve their health and fitness goals. My goal is to take the guesswork out of health and fitness for busy, high-achieving individuals, and create a plan that fits their lifestyle and not the other way around. I’m here to help you feel better in your own skin, get stronger, maybe lose a little weight along the way, and educate you, so you can feel confident doing this on your own & maintaining your results long term.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest & scariest challenge was simply taking the leap & quitting my engineering job. I spent a lot of time, money, & hard work pursuing an engineering degree and dedicated essentially all of my 20’s to my job – it was my entire identity. Quitting a job that provided me with a comfortable and reliable income, health insurance, a 401K, & unlimited PTO was terrifying and on paper seemed crazy but I knew in my gut it was what I wanted, and needed, to do.

I also think people glamorize the idea of quitting your corporate job to pursue your passion. I worked 7 days a week, most weeks, outside of planned vacations, for over a year and a half to make ends meet. Businesses take a long time to grow into something financially sustainable and it’s something I’m still working to build & will likely take years before it’s solid but I would still chose it any day over my corporate job.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I used to define success by how much money I made & my job title. That has changed quite a bit. I now define success by my own happiness & how much I can help others. Am I happy? Am I helping others? If both boxes are checked, that’s success in my book.
