Community Highlights: Meet Melinda Wilson of Orlando Music Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Wilson.

Hi Melinda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I became a board-certified music therapist in 2008 after attending the music therapy program at California State University Northridge. I moved to Orlando in 2017 and work for a hospice company for a year before starting my private practice in 2018. Been practicing music therapy primarily specializing in elder care and interventions for children with special needs. I currently receive Medicaid funding to provide music therapy for children with a variety of diagnoses including autism, Down syndrome, speech delays, developmental delays, aphasia, visual impairments, ADHD, depression, anxiety, cancer, and more.

I am also an aspiring songwriter and performer active in the Orlando music scene.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have had some struggles with finding a position that suited me, so that is why I decided to make my own business. I have had to take the time to research how to do it on my own and I am currently a single woman managing my own private practice. I have been very busy pursing my career and I left behind my family in Los Angeles with the dream of having success with my career in Orlando. I also take care of my disabled Aunt who is wheelchair-bound and take time away from my business to visit her to maintain her quality of life. I am her only caregiver and family member in the area.

We’ve been impressed with Orlando Music Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a board-certified music therapist with over 12 years of experience. I provide music therapy interventions in a variety of settings and locations. I provide live interactive performances for groups, relaxation sessions, behavioral interventions for children with special needs, songwriting and analysis for adults, adapted music lessons (in voice, piano, and guitar), percussion jam sessions, group sing-along interventions, and interventions for seniors with dementia and other neurological impairments.

I work in private homes, music studios, child development clinics, schools, daycares, assisted living, and group homes for people with disabilities.

My offering are unique within my practice because I bring/provide music equipment to assist with auditory amplification for larger groups. Music technology can be used to address treatment goals. A treatment plan is established after the first visits and specific/measurable goals are addressed during weekly, biweekly or monthly sessions.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am looking for individuals that will continue to help me expand my practice and recommend facilities and schools to contract with. I am looking for additional funding sources (nonprofit agencies, grants, insurance, etc.). I am also looking for individuals who can help with videos, website development, social media marketing, and more.
