Conversations with Alejandra Humpierres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Humpierres.

Hi Alejandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Tipsy Beach Swimwear started back in 2001 in Venezuela. My mom, Lisa Humpierres, a Gastroenterologist from one of the most recognized hospitals in Caracas, started at the garage of our house making swimsuits for me and my friends back in the days when I was going to the UCAB (Universidad Catolica Andres Bello). She always focused on doing custom-made suits for us and the word started to spread out to other schools. The great quality and even better prices were a hit and she started o have so many clients that had to hire two ladies to help her out.

During 16 years, Tipsy Beach created beautiful pieces for ladies of all ages and body types. Everyone that visited knew that she was going to be able to create the swimsuit of their dreams and that will fit their bodies like a glove. Unfortunately, the political and economical situation of our country made us take the decision to migrate looking for an opportunity to have a better future; that is when we came to the United Estates. This country opened up its doors to us, and even though it has not been easy, about four years ago Tipsy Beach opened up here in the Orlando area. As we did in Venezuela, we like to pamper our clients and let them create with us their dream swimsuit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Coming to United Estates hasn’t been easy. In Venezuela, we knew how everything worked; here it has been a learning process. The language, the culture, the laws have been challenges. We felt like the new kid in a school that didn’t know anyone, but little by little, we have found our way, and as it did back in our country the word of mouth has been our best ally. Making connections with amazing people has helped us to get up and start doing what we like.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a swimsuit atelier where we create custom designs for all our clients. We have our own designs that we present to our clients for them to chose or they can bring their own design and we will make it for them. When they come to visit us they can pick any of the ones we have in stock or they can order a new one; they can select the design, combine sizes, and chose the fabric they want. We want them to have the experience of designing their dream swimsuit; we serve as advisors on what we think will benefit their body types based on our almost 20 years of experience creating swimsuits for women. Lately, we have expanded our portfolio and have been developing a new line for the entire family. Yes, now the boys are part of the Tipsy Beach clientele. Now family matching is the new thing… We have been creating matching swimsuits for mom, dad, daughter, and son, and let me tell you, they all look adorable.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Moving to the United Estates has been a learning experience. It has pushed us to reinvent ourselves and start again from zero. We have learned that networking is key for growing your business, talking to people about what you do, everywhere at any time… you never know when someone might be interested, and then like magic, you have a new client!
