Conversations with Alex Minor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Minor.

Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I actually started out in the music industry. I was an aspiring songwriter, producer and audio engineer and attended Full Sail University in Winter Park back in 2004.

After graduating, I bounced around the city doing internships and making music with friends until I landed a job at Central Florida News 13 (now Spectrum News 13) running audio. After a few years at Channel 13, I started freelancing in the corporate events industry which is where I first started working as a cameraman.

But once I bought my own camera and started shooting my own projects I fell in love and knew that this was the direction I wanted to take my career in. Marketing with video made a lot of sense to me because at its core, it’s all about telling stories.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Trying to build a business has been the most challenging thing I’ve ever done aside from being a father.

I’m not a “natural born” entrepreneur. In fact, I never wanted to own a business at all. The first time anyone offered to pay me for something creative, it was a total shock to me.

I figured out really quickly that if I was going to survive and provide for my family, I had to learn the BUSINESS side of things as fast I possibly could. Figuring out what I wanted to offer, how to offer it and how to market and sell it are things I think all creatives struggle with.

So if anybody reading this thinks that they’re the only ones with imposter syndrome or feeling lost because you didn’t go to school for business or never planned on owning one… I’m right there with you.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Eye AM Media is a video marketing agency. If you take a video production company and digital marketing firm and smash em together… You’ve got us.

We work with coaches, consultants and service-based business owners to build brands and marketing collateral that rely on their honesty, personality and humanity to attract the right clientele.

That means we only work with clients who get us genuinely excited about their businesses because how can we tell your story in the best way possible if we don’t fully believe in you?

If a business owner runs out and hires your average off the street videographer, they’ll have to tell them every little thing that needs to be done to create the project(s) that they need.

With us, we come to you with creative ideas and marketing strategies on what content to create to make an impact on your unique situation.

The goal is for you to do the least amount of work possible when it comes to the content so you can spend more time making sure your business is doing what it’s supposed to do.

We’re not just guys with the fancy cameras and lights. We are consultants and creative partners.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When it comes to finding a mentor… I think you have to let them find you. Or you have to stumble across them naturally because you’ll feel when the vibe is right. The guys I consider mentors are ones that have already been where I am that make me feel like if I had met them outside of the business, we’d probably still be friends.

As far as networking, my best advice is to develop genuine curiosity about other people. Always approach those initial interactions with the intent of learning as much as you can about the other person and wait for them to ask about you. Enjoy that learning and use it figure out how you can help more people. If you focus on that, the opportunities will come.
