Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Jackson.
Hi Bobby, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in and around Detroit, Michigan. I moved down to Florida after I separated from the military in 2016 and went to DSC (Daytona State College) to get my degree in photography.
My love of photographer started when I was really young, probably early teens. In high school, I took my first class and I was hooked. I loved the fact that an image could be captured with the touch of a button, but with the same scene, you could tell different stories based on how you handled your camera. I continued photography as a hobby for about ten years before I decided to start taking it seriously and going to school for my passion. Once I graduated, I worked on discovering my niche which is now underwater and Boudoir.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With COVID its self being an obstacle, I found starting a business not knowing anyone or having a connection to your community was a huge deal. The #1 thing I heard from potential clients is that they already know a photographer or had a connection to a photographer. With the area being heavily saturated a lot of potential clients preferred to get their friends to do it for free rather than come to me, and that was a huge hit to my confidence.
There have been other challenges along the way, but they are personal and id rather not discuss them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer. I specialize in boudoir and underwater.
With boudoir, it’s an amazing feeling when a client starts off explaining things about her body that she hates, but when the images come back those are some of their favorite images! It’s a powerful feeling knowing you used your skills in order to empower someone and build their confidence.
Underwater is just another beast that I love working with. I’ve never loved not being in control of my environment so much. The way the water plays with focal length and depth of field, how the light reacts to the water, reflections, etc. there is just so much to play with that I cant wait to do more.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I have learned some huge lessons. The most interesting thing I have learned though is just because the world seems like it’s stopped doesn’t mean you should. I have drafted so many project, I have re-edited sessions, I just wanted to keep finding that growth and wanted to do something different. I re-evaluated and critiqued a lot of my old and current work just so I can keep myself on my toes.
So even if you’re stuck inside, there are ways you can grow.
