Today we’d like to introduce you to Brissa Renee.
Hi Brissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since I was a little girl, I was always drawing or making things. I took art class all through middle and high school. I’ve always had an eye for design of many different types. Interior design, tattoos, baking, party planning. The list goes on and on.
I started my tattoo career at just 14 years old, I was working out of my mom’s house which was extremely frowned upon.
A couple years of that passed until I landed my first apprenticeship at the age of 17 at Subculturez Tattoo in Orange City.
Over the next 2 years I honed my skills, learned proper techniques, and gained invaluable experience under the guidance of my mentors.
When I turned 22 I took a huge leap. I left my home base and started working at a shop in Orlando. I really feel this was the push I needed to further my career and reputation. I was working with crazy talented people which fueled me to be the best I could be. So I could stand toe to toe with the other artists.
I started doing conventions around the US. I landed 2 huge sponsorships with the biggest company’s in the industry. I was working harder than I ever had and after a few years of that, I decided it was time.
Time to open my own shop. Where my ideas and values could really be brought to light. I faced many hurtles while trying to make this dream a reality. The discrimination against tattoo shops is still very real. I was turned down by at least 9 owners that didn’t want my business in their building. Just as I was losing hope I signed a lease and within 6 months i opened my first studio, Anatomy Divine. The name comes from one of my mentors, Steve Haight.
After just 6 months of me opening this all female power house of a studio. I got the opportunity to purchase the shop where it all began, Subculturez.
Even though I had a lot on my plate and had no idea what I was really doing I couldn’t let an opportunity like this go. Open for 20 years, I bought Subculturez, renovated it, hired all new artist and set out to make it my own.
Here I am 2 years later and everything is perfect. The shops are amazing. My crews are some of the best.
Our reputations are rock solid. I would’ve never imagined things would’ve gone this far and this great.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Neo Traditional color tattoos. I am known for my line work and solid saturated colors. I’m booked out 6 months in advance. I think I am most proud of the loyalty my customers show me. The bonds I’ve created over the years are just the cherry on top to an incredible career.
I think my personality and my passion sets me apart from my piers. In a world where there’s a tattoo shop on basically every corner, you have to have a special something to stand out, and I really think my special something is my heart.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the fast pace of our city. I love the sunshine and how beautiful it is everywhere we go. I love that every time I step outside people talk to me and are so friendly. I just love Florida. It’s a privilege to live here.
I’ve never really thought about what I like least. Probably the drivers and traffic.
