Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Sands
Hi Cathy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been interested in art but didn’t see how it would translate into a career so I pursed a degree in Business in NY. After moving to VA with my husband while he pursued his graduate degree, I worked a job in furniture sales. I was finally exposed to an interior designer at the store and I became quite interested. We relocated to Florida and I was finally able to pursue my design degree. After a prolonged journey to get my degree and working in several industry related jobs I decided to open my own firm. If only I had known what I know now but that is the journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! I don’t think pursuing your own business ever is, especially if you are doing it without investors. I hate to say this but when I started I had yellow page ads so my business and how we work has definitely evolved over the years. Weathering a recession, hurricanes, crazy employees and crazy clients to name a few.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Color has always inspired me and for so many years it was beige, beige, beige in interior design. Now the design world is moving towards a more unique and colorful interiors which I have been doing all along. My biggest win is when I go more bold, more colorful, more unique and the clients just love it.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As an avid reader I am always collecting information. I read multiple newsletters – Architectural Digest, Domino, Business of Home, etc. I also peruse Instagram almost daily. I find inspiration from many sources. I also take online classes or trainings several times a month.
