Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Early.
Hi Crystal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve had the love and passion for doing hair since I was a little girl. At 7 years old, I taught myself how to braid and cut hair (on Barbie dolls of course). It’s truly it’s a God-given gift. By the age of 9, I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser when I grew up. My sister was always in charge of doing my hair until she moved out when I was 14 so I was left to learn how to do it on my own. On my journey through learning how to do my hair, I discovered making wigs from watching videos on YouTube. I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the idea of them and knew that’s what I wanted to specialize in. I decided to enroll into Cosmetology school to pursue my dreams 2 months after graduating high school in 2017 and became a Licensed Cosmetologist in 2018 with a specialty in wigs. Throughout cosmetology school, I developed my brand “Styles by Crystal” which I later rebranded in 2021 and became “Truly Divine Hair LLC.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Though the path has not always been easy, I’m grateful for every bit of it because it helps me grow not only as a person but as a business owner as well. I’ve definitely had my fair share of failures along the way. Leaving my 9-5 to do business full time and making $0 for 3 weeks straight, going back to my 9-5 in desperate need of money, taking breaks due to being overwhelmed, having inconsistent orders and low monthly revenue, not charging what I’m worth, not enough customers, acquiring the funds to keep my business running without going broke or pulling from my personal bank account, marketing, working 100% of my business by myself, self-criticism… the list goes on. A lot of the things that startup small business owners go through; I’ve been through it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Truly Divine Hair LLC offers wigs, hair bundles, and services such as wig touch-ups, coloring, wig installs, and sew-ins. My “specialty” and most requested would definitely be my human hair lace wigs. The 2 types of human hair that I sell are 100% Virgin Human Hair (lasting 2-3 years) and Raw Indian Hair (lasting 3-5 years). The thing that sets me apart the most from other business owners is I like to appeal to as many people as I can instead of narrowing down my business to a specific group of people. Most business owners like to find a specific target audience to sell and market to, but I’m the complete opposite. It’s probably not the ideal thing to do as a business owner in my field but it works for me and it works for customers as well. I offer 3 types of hair overall: Synthetic, 100% Virgin Human Hair and Raw Indian Hair. Whether you wear cheap or expensive hair, it doesn’t make a difference to me because I provide it all. My goal is and always will be to make sure everyone is included. My synthetic wigs are given just as much TLC as the human hair wigs and all customers are treated with equal respect. I like to keep things fair and simple and I will always do everything I can to impress customers to ensure that they come back for more. Super-fast AND FREE shipping (orders go out same-day or next-day), free supplies for styling your hair along with your order, offering hair care tips on my website, flexible payment options aka “Shop Now, Pay Later” and offering delivery or free pick up for local residents. I’m also mobile and willing to travel to customers who want their hair done as well. I’m very proud of my integrity, the passion I’ve gained for my business throughout the years, how much my business itself has grown, and how far my work has come. There’s so many techniques and overall business knowledge that I’ve gained since first starting in 2018.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I definitely envision the wig and hair industry to go through a huge shift over the next 5-10 years. It is expected to become a 13.3-BILLION-dollar industry by 2026 and I believe it will keep rising from there. Wigs have been around for hundreds of years and they’ll be here for many more. There’s constantly new methods and techniques for styling wigs and installing weave. A lot of customers who wear wigs and weave deal with hair loss due to medical conditions such as Cancer and Alopecia. Unfortunately, neither one has a cure and as long as they’re both around, wigs and weave will be around.
