Today we’d like to introduce you to Dina Cruz
Hi Dina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well… it all stated on a spring morning in May in a Brooklyn hospital. All jokes aside I started stand up comedy in Feb 2022. But I’ve really been an entertainer all my life if I’m being on honest. I was using my Dominican Tia’s living room as a stage during Noche Buena and Baitizmos for as long as I could remember. Making people smile was always a thing for me. Back then it was forcing my cousins to dance to made up choreography to what ever was trending on MTV that week. As I got older I always kind of did something related. I was a music video model for a while I did catalogs and commercials. Acting was always huge for me but I really did fall in love with stand up comedy and not just the performance aspect of it but actual context as well. Being a great writer is crucial too and I’ve just been working on that lately
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a stand up comic is the most unsmooth road some one can take. Most of my family thought I was insane when I decided to take this craft on. But now my siblings and and even some of my cousins have been out to shows and say they can’t picture me ever doing anything else. Doing stand up in Florida is different too. It’s hard to make people smile when they’ve got sunshine all year long. Any comedian, yes especially your favorite headliners, will tell you the Florida demographic is the hardest in the country to make laugh. So when you’re a developing comic in this region it’s so easy to get discouraged and want to give up. When that happens you just have to be tenacious and keep going no matter what.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an entertainer. I act. mostly small roles, short film, commercials, music videos. But I am also a professional stand up comedian. I started my career in my hometown of Miami. And now I tour all over the country. Orlando being so close to home has made one of my fav cities to perform in. It been great to build rapport with the scene here as well. I would say i specialize in just being honest. I think my perspective is one a lot people have especially my fellow millennials. I’m sure every generation has said what I’m about to say but I think it’s way more true for us than anyone. We really are a timeless group. We understand the things boomers complain and say are stupid about the world and we under stand the incoherent slang gen z uses even if we don’t always exactly know what it means. I think have that perspective make my comedy very relatable and funny. I think what I’m most proud of is being able to not let it affect me in a negative way when i don’t perform so great. Which doesn’t happen as often now as it did in the beginning. . It’s really easy to second guess anything you do as a beginner but i never let that stop me and now I’m doing clubs not just outside of my hometown here in Orlando but across the entire country as well. what sets me apart is that i work really really hard at my craft even from the beginning. I always said I was gonna work hard until I was the funniest person in any room I walk into. And now that I feel I am the funniest in any room I walk into I’m just going to double down and work twice as hard till everyone else believes I am too.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Every comedians knows the best app for comedians is the Notes app. A few personal favs are my audible and kindle. But I have to admit I am a sucker for real pages. I’m a very big Paulo Cuelho fan. He’s such a great writer. I honestly think the best source for a comedian is what ever it is that brings you joy. Not whatever you think other people would be interested in. But quite literally just do your favorite things as much as possible if not every day and find the laughter in that.
