Conversations with Dominique Kinsler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Kinsler

Hi Dominique, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
At the time, I was working as a mid-level leader in corporate America. While I loved my team, I was growing increasingly discontent with how the corporate structure functioned. It started to feel like it was stifling my creativity, and that, in turn, began to affect my mental health.

Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and like many others, I found myself reflecting on life and purpose. I spent a lot of time praying and meditating, trying to figure out what was next for me. Around that time, I began having vivid dreams of green pastures and lush gardens, which sparked my curiosity. Those dreams led me to dive into researching gardening, and I quickly fell in love with it.

Being a natural talker, with an “over the top” personality as some would say, I wanted to share my gardening journey, so I turned to social media to document it. As my audience grew, I realized just how many people were also eager to learn about gardening. That’s when I shifted to creating more educational content, which has led me to where I am today—helping others discover the joy of gardening through videos and online content.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a Black content creator, opportunities can sometimes feel scarce, and it’s tough when companies and brands tend to undervalue the content you create. That’s been one of the more challenging aspects of my journey.

The road definitely hasn’t been without its struggles, but there have been some major wins along the way too. One of the biggest challenges has been showing up authentically on the internet. Being authentic online can expose you to the perceptions of people all around the world, which can really play on any personal insecurities you may have. Content creation is still a relatively new field, and because so many people use social media, there’s often this misconception that it’s easy—like you can just create content because we’re always on our phones anyway. But in reality, it’s so much more involved.

To keep growing, I quickly realized I had to consistently produce higher-quality, well-thought-out content. That meant diving headfirst into the world of video filming and editing, which was completely new to me. It required a lot of time, effort, and financial investment, with the hope that it would all balance out eventually.

It wasn’t easy, but over time, I’ve seen the results of that hard work. I’m genuinely excited to see where this journey continues to take me, and I’m so thankful I trusted myself to step onto this path, despite the obstacles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love this question! While I’m professionally a licensed pharmacist, online I’ve become better known for my passion for gardening. Some people even call me ‘The Collard Green Lady’ because of how much I enjoy growing collard greens.

As a gardening content creator, I specialize in helping people transform what they think is a ‘black thumb’ into a thriving vegetable garden. My goal is to show that anyone can garden—whether they live in an apartment, condo, or house.

I’m also in the process of expanding my business to offer personalized gardening consultation services for those who want to start their own garden but might need a bit more guidance to get started. One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to empower others to grow their own food, no matter where they live.

What sets me apart is my approachable, down-to-earth teaching style. I break down gardening into simple, easy-to-follow steps, making it accessible even for complete beginners. I truly believe that gardening is for everyone, and I’m here to help people feel confident in their ability to grow something beautiful and nourishing.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe determination has been the key characteristic to my success. In a genre where there’s no clear playbook for how to succeed, my determination has kept me moving forward. I’ve been committed to figuring things out along the way, learning new skills, and adapting as I go. That unwavering drive to succeed, even when the path isn’t always clear, has been crucial to getting me to where I am today.
