Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily and Amanda Gale.
Hi Emily and Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in South Florida, we discovered our love and passion for the water. At an early age, we started fishing off the docks of Islamorada wanting nothing more than to go deep-sea fishing. Coming from a family that knew nothing about fishing we told our parents we wanted to go on a fishing trip for our 13 birthdays! You could say after that day, we were forever hooked.
We continued fishing recreationally throughout our childhood and young adult lives. We then attended the University of Miami, earning degrees in Microbiology and Immunology while competing on the track and field team as pole vaulters.
The two of us spent our summer breaks and long weekends working on a busy fishing charter boat out of Key West. It was there that we finished our sea time, honed in on our skills, and earned our USCG 50 Ton Captains Licenses. With that, we started our own business, Gale Force Twins LLC.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After college graduation, the two of us had to choose between grad school, med school, or fishing. We chose to take at least one year to work full-time on fishing charter boats in South Florida. After that year, we knew we were in the right place and opened up our own fishing charter business. We specialized in taking kids and families out fishing. We focused heavily on teaching our anglers how to fish, so they could take the skills home and do it themselves.
In March of 2020, most of the world shut down due to the pandemic, and that included our business. Just about every single one of our fishing trips was canceled due to travel concerns. The two of us now had to figure out how to keep the business going without being able to take anglers out fishing.
That is where we switched to teaching online! We started our first YouTube channel with the goal to educate, explain and entertain. Within four short months, we had over 40,000 subscribers and a year later we had over 100,000 subscribers. In some ways, you could say we are very thankful for the pandemic as it gave us the opportunity to teach more than just a few people on our boat how to fish, but now we could teach the world!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We consider ourselves more than just content creators we consider ourselves entrepreneurs.
We want Gale Force to be more than just a YouTube channel but also a brand. In the past year, we have designed our own line of fishing rods and began designing high-quality performance wear for long days on the boat and in the sun.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Grit. If there is one thing you need for a business to succeed it is hardwork, being intentional with your time, and grit.
There will be times that you fail and times that you succeed. We have had some of our best produced (in our opinion) videos completely flop on us, we’ve had many delays and many rounds of prototypes for our fishing rods and we have been fighting to maintain an inventory in our apparel line.
You can’t look at these things as failures or setbacks though. You need to know that this is all information to help you better succeed in the future.
