Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Civitate.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve started out as a video hobbyist. Shooting video of my friends skateboard and just day to day fun. After a few years of filming on my iPhone I finally purchased my first camera. After I started shooting with that I was instantly hooked. One of my first paid gigs was real estate photography. I would shoot a couple houses a week before or after work. From there I started to focus more on videography because I liked creating video a lot more than photos. After a few years of freelancing at a low scale I got my first full time job where I was able to create video content for a company’s social media and YouTube. I started their brand new Chanel and after 1 year we had over 20k subscribers and they were getting paid!
We had a falling out and I went back to solo freelancer. This is really where it got good. I spent all my time learning the art of videography.
Fast forward to today me and my wife run Reel Reef Media. And small media company that still gives you that personal freelance feel but services hundreds of clients a year with a small team.
We are wanting to keep that personal touch while offering the highest quality possible.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The long road isn’t always smooth. There were times between jobs when I had little to no money coming in but I stuck with the vision and learned a lot on my free time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When it’s comes to real estate media my work stands out locally because we tell a story. Even though I’m a 1 man video team you still get that small production look / feel and people locally know my work when they see it.
I shoot with a cinema camera and I color grade and make each scene look as good as possible.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as being able to do what you love everyday while still be able to put food on the table and taking care of the ones you love.
