Conversations with J. Lamont

Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Lamont.

Hi J. Lamont, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since the age of ten, I have been writing music as a hobby and as a way to relieve stress. In my early 20’s I moved from South Florida to Orlando and began taking my passion for music more seriously. I linked up with the collective Psych Klan, who opened doors for me in the music in Orlando. The collective, which consists of artists, songwriters, creative directors, producers, videographers and more, eventually named me their Vice President. Since then, Psych Klan collective has expanded to California and Oregon. While still helping the initiatives of Psych Klan, I have joined forces with Orlando artists R1ZO & Kuko Cigar as well as producer Phluid to form Hip Hop music group F.C.M.G. Today, you can find their first collaboration mixtape titled “FWDT4” on all streaming platforms. Although I have many collaboration projects and work behind the scenes for collective Psych Klan, my first solo album is officially in the works.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. Growing up, I didn’t really have the support from my parents to pursue music seriously. I have a million stories I can tell about my stepfather who confiscated my music/lyrics over the years because he felt it was inappropriate and threw it away. Made me start from scratch. There’s the obvious financial struggles of funding studio time, promo, etc. while maintaining a 9-5 and some side hustles to pay for it all. And just learning how to adapt with the changes in the music industry in general.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
First and foremost, I am an artist. I take pride in my craft and I love what I do in the creative process. From songwriting to co-producing to being able to sing and rap, I feel like I come with the complete package. I’m old school but I can hang with the new school. I can give you a trap song with substance, I hip hop track with a story and R&B track for your feelings. I’m not a rapper. I’m not a singer. I’m an artist.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
My first dream as a kid was to be in the NBA. I just wasn’t blessed with height, LOL.
