Today we’d like to introduce you to James Wing.
Hi James, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started playing guitar in the late 90’s, taking lessons and trying to keep up with playing as many Nirvana songs as my buddies could. As soon as 2 of my friends became proficient enough to make noise with me we started a rough sounding band. After graduation, my best friend and I made a run at starting a “serious” band, which we did. I mean ‘serious’ to the extent that a three piece hardcore punk band playing dead clubs on weeknights in Jacksonville, FL in the 2000’s could be. More projects followed and I kept pace proficiency-wise with my peers in the punk scene. Eventually, I started offering guitar lessons- nothing formal and students came only by word of mouth. Eventually, day job commitments became prohibitive to any side hustles so the teaching gig went away. In 2018 I accepted a position at my company in Central Florida. The workload still afforded little spare time. Eventually, I found different employment that allowed me to reapproach music in a meaningful manner. I connected with 3 individuals from the local punk scene and formed a band. As the band gained momentum through recording and live shows, I remembered how much I also enjoyed teaching others to play music. So, at the beginning of 2025, I converted a room in my home to a guitar studio and started offering lessons. I was lucky enough to very quickly have eager potential students approach me. I am located in a very populated suburban location and offer a more accessible price point than the music schools and instructors in the area. Make any amount of money while holding a guitar?- Don’t threaten me with a good time!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Any struggle solely lies in the journey to finding time to make it happen. Once I had the time, the implementation was actually pretty smooth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Guitar instructor- Four Corners Guitar Instruction
Guitarist- Robots Prevail
I am proud of my rededication to music. A lot of people never get back around to seriously delving into activities from their past that they enjoyed.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For musicians thinking of offering lessons: I guarantee you that if you live in a metropolitan area, there are individuals in your immediate vicinity who would love to accept instruction. Your vicinity and the pricing that you can offer matters.
Pricing:
- 30 minute lessons @ 25.00 each
