Conversations with Jessica Delacruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Delacruz.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been singing before I even started to talk. I started writing songs since I was 7 because my dad who was a musician encouraged me. My dad inspired me from the very beginning. He played guitar, piano and sang. I learned how to play because of him. I was in choir when I was in middle school and high school and also majored in music when I was in college. During that time, I did classical and opera music. I learned how to sing in German, Italian, French, and even did a song in Czech for my senior recital. I learned music theory and developed my musicianship. I spent a summer in Italy for an opera program where I learned Italian, lived with the locals and performed opera scenes for them. It was one of the best experiences in my life because I’ve never went overseas before, and definitely made me want to travel more. After I graduated, I decided not to do classical music because songwriting and performing my own music brought me so much more joy. The best thing in the world is singing my songs and having the audience sing them with me. It’s one of the greatest feelings in the world. In the last couple of years, I have gotten sick and was not able to perform anymore. I was depressed because singing makes me happy even when I’m sad because it’s the ultimate release and outlet for myself. Thankfully my doctor suggested I seek therapy, and that changed my life. I’ve started writing and singing again. Even my therapist said that she has never seen me glow as much as I am now throughout the whole time, I was working with her. I started performing out, and that has made a huge difference. I believe we should be doing what makes us happy and not settle. I don’t want to live my life wondering what could have been. Right now, my music is Alice in wonderland theme where I use the theme as a metaphor for what I experienced.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter who plays guitar, piano, and sing. What sets me apart is my strong voice and Alice wonderland theme. I use a lot of metaphors from the story to express my life experiences. I’m most proud for not giving up. I’ve gone through a lot, and I kept pushing to sing.

What were you like growing up?
I was a friendly, bubbly, and outspoken person. I was into romance comedies, anime, and spend my days listening to music. MTV and cartoons helped raised me and watered my dreams. I was the type of person who would be friends with anyone. Doesn’t matter who.
