Conversations with Jessica Setts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Setts.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, it was instilled in me that success was having a career in order to be successful in life. I always had a passion for the Medical field. I originally wanted to be a Pediatrician, but giving birth to my son at 20 years old changed that dream knowing it would slow my path down. I then became a Medical Assistant to be able to “climb the ladder” as one would say. Once working on the “front end” for some time, I found myself more passionate about the business aspect of the Medical Field and went on as a Medical Secretary in the Operating Room and Emergency Room for about a total of 5 years or so. I have always been told and would like to think of myself as a creative person, in school; I always enjoyed working on projects, designing, and/or decorating anything. For my kid’s birthdays I would go above and beyond and I never thought much about the fulfillment it brought me until my husband made a point that I should look further into possibly starting a business and offer my services far more than just at home. That was the birth of JaySweetTooth. Originally, I started with cupcakes and confectionery treats, priding myself on all cupcakes being made from scratch with real, natural ingredients. Working in the hospital and fulfilling orders on the weekends, I found myself burnt out within the first year in 2017. Trying to juggle a full-time job being a full-time mom and wife as well as starting this new business venture became very overwhelming and I decided to take a break from the baking and ventured into the Décor and designing for parties and events.

At that time, I became familiar with Etsy and opened my Etsy store. I started adding Custom party favors to my list of items once I opened in 2017, which inspired JaySweetTooth to become JaySweetPartyStudio “Your One Stop Party Studio”.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been smooth sailing! As stated earlier, working a full-time job having a full family definitely has its challenges and you have to be very organized in order to be able to balance everything. There’s also a lot of competition in this industry. However, I strongly believe that there is a client for everyone out there. Everyone has a different style to what they bring and I am a strong believer that is what makes the difference for everyone. Personally, I have dedicated myself to learning and staying on top of all the new “trends” in this industry and have invested in many classes/tutorials. I am a student of my work all the time to be able to always provide the best! Recently, I have been focusing on making treats again as well as baking because I did find myself missing that part of my business and always had clients reaching out for treats. Also, financially at times there were struggles when you want to invest in inventory and you have bills and you’re not able to purchase what you’d like. I had to learn that you have to take steps and little by little add to my collection and be smarter when investing in my products and to accept that things happen over time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
JaySweetPartyStudio specializes in being your One Stop Party Studio. Your One Stop Party Studio basically is everything you need to make your “Dream Party a Reality”. Whether you are in need of simple treats or a cake “Currently, I do not make cakes but I will find someone for you” to the full party decor and so much more in between. I have been researching and studying ways to expand my Event Planning business and will be offering rentals as I am investing in materials and inventory that can take any party/event and add that extra sparkle. I would have to say what I am most proud of is my dedication to continue growing within this industry despite all the discouraging obstacles that get thrown at you. Furthermore, I always lean to God to reassure myself that I am on the right path and that I am working towards my purpose. That’s what I would say sets me apart from others, I pray daily to know that I am walking faithfully as a child of God and with his blessing over my business there is no way to fail.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I definitely read books and listen to podcasts to constantly feed myself motivation. Two books that I’m currently reading are The Power of your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy and Sacred Woman by Queen Afua. Some podcasts that I listen to while I’m driving or when I’m working at home are definitely Sarah Jakes Roberts the Woman Evolve podcast. I love her podcast; I also listen to a podcast called Get Rich Or Get Drunk Trying and Social Proof podcast. I have to say that in the season of my life on YouTube Pastor Mike Todd from Transformation Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma has definitely been a pivotal moment in my life and career. I watch him weekly and stay up-to-date on his sermons. His most recent series is called Crazier Faith and it has been life-changing. I definitely recommend that series.
