Conversations with jillian!

Today we’d like to introduce you to jillian!

We’re so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in South Florida (near Fort Lauderdale) and moved up to Orlando for school (UCF). My whole life, I’ve been involved in music in some way, whether it was joining the school choir/band, attending instrument and voice lessons, or getting introduced to 80s rockbands in the backseat of my Dad’s car. One day, when I was around 18, my mom had introduced me to a friend who owned a recording studio, and he offered to have me come in and record my first song. As I recorded, he encouraged me to continue with writing and creating music in general – it was warming to hear that a stranger actually enjoyed what I had created. And so, I began to record more music and learn how to use music interfaces, which allows me to edit my own music!

I got into doing shows by attending one in December of 2019 – it was a 98 Entertainment-run show and… I guess they had an artist pull from the show? I’m still unsure how this happened for me, but I got the courage to say that I made music and I could take that artist’s place if they wanted the spot filled. My music friend, eyeSAYGE, or Freon as I know him, allowed me the opportunity to perform for the first time! To this day, I am so grateful for that moment – I’ve had many shows since then, and many more to come.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. There’s always been the struggle of, “Will I succeed? Is this dream even worth chasing?” And I’ve come to the conclusion that your happiness is always worth the chase. Making music and performing makes me happy, not necessarily the successes. There were times when my family encouraged me to make music, but also pushed me towards career paths that I had no interest in pursuing. Mind you, they only wanted me to have stability. Artistry comes with the price of being unstable sometimes, but I think it’s worth it. My current struggle is creating music out of peace. Usually, I use my negative emotions to create something positive. Thankfully, I don’t have much negative emotion anymore, but I am now faced with the challenge to create music entirely out of thin air. This is a definite struggle and it’s slowed down my process a bit, but it’s not impossible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer and songwriter – I mainly create melodic Trap music, however, I would love to get into Rock or Pop, maybe even something more electronic one day. I’m known for creating multiple tracks of harmonies and sounds within my music to create something beautiful! I’m most proud of how much my confidence has grown over the last couple of years. At first, I would attend open mics and be so petrified that I’d be seated during my entire performance. Nowadays, I can’t bring myself to even think about sitting down. I’ve traveled outside of the state for shows, I’ve made music friends online that are far away, and I’ve taught myself everything that I know about recording and mixing. I’m proud that I am stable on my own and I can speak for myself when it comes to my sound. I believe this sets me apart from others as well. The most reliable person to you should be yourself.

What were you like growing up?
I loved going outside. I could be outside for hours, playing pretend, climbing trees, digging holes in the dirt. My mother has a framed picture of me with dirt all over my face and hands, and I have on the biggest smile! I was (and still am) a silly kid that laughed at pretty much everything. I enjoyed reading books and escaping into the stories. As I got a little older, I fell in love with playing video games too. In school, I was the one who tended to stick up for others that weren’t ready to stick up for themselves. I did many different sports and activities, such as: kung-fu, roller/ice hockey, gymnastics, piano/violin/saxophone lessons, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I was extremely fortunate to have loving parents who only wanted the best for me and did everything they could to involve me in whatever I wanted to be involved in.
