Conversations with Joel Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Gonzalez

Hi Joel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I ’m a self-taught artist from Puerto Rico, and I moved to Florida at the age of 13. Art has always been a passion of mine, but it wasn’t until my 20s that I truly began to explore my creativity and share my work with others. At first, I wasn’t sure how to navigate the art world, but as people started to notice my unique perspective, I found my path. My artwork is a reflection of my struggles and life experiences, capturing the way I see and interpret the world around me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing in this world comes easy, and one of my biggest struggles has been figuring myself out—especially where I fit in as a self-taught artist. There are so many paths to take, and it can be overwhelming at times. But once I learned to block out the noise and focus on what truly makes me who I am, everything started to make sense. It reminded me why I create in the first place.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a self-taught artist, I’ve embraced the beauty of imperfection, understanding that each mistake is a stepping stone towards growth. There are no rigid rules in my practice; instead, I allow my intuition to guide me. Every piece I create is a testament to resilience and a reminder that our experiences, no matter how challenging, can fuel creativity and inspire others.
I hope that through my art, I can ignite a spark in others—encouraging them to embrace their own stories and express themselves, whether through paint, music, writing, or any other medium. I want to remind them that they are not alone in their struggles and that their voices matter. In a world that often feels chaotic, I believe that art has the power to heal, to inspire, and to foster connection.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
This industry is forever changing with technology being a big part of it the art world has shifted it dramatically that’s why self expression to me is everything as people we are losing what use to be normal human interaction. That’s why I love to do what I do creating a piece of art that can see pass any language religion and just makes you feel something without saying a single word.
