Conversations with Jonathan Ortiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Ortiz.

Hi Jonathan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Born and raised in NYC where there’s a basketball court on every street, I literally grew up on a basketball court. At an early age, I would be the teammate to organize extra practices (players only). My first job was a summer camp counselor. I was in charge of the gymnasium and setting up games for the kids. Fast forward 10 years later and I’m a volunteer coach. I quickly learned that not only do I love working with the youth and providing them with a influenced I lacked as a child but I was good at teaching the game, creating a culture and most importantly I care about coaching attitude as a priority.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road but it has been an exciting one. The troubles of finding practice space, affordable and trust worthy uniform sources as well as finding reliable help to ensure growth of the organization is tough but we get the job done. Even if we have to practice outdoors occasionally. Getting 40 kids all on the same page is no easy task but a very fulfilling one. I also design and press the uniforms myself to help cut cost for the parents. Finding gym space during the height of the pandemic was impossible and it’s still hard to find gym space currently.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a youth basketball coach and program director it’s on me to set the standard, led by example, and help build character. I specialize in creating a culture within my program. Being humble, working hard, helping one another. Those are just a few things we stand on. I’m most proud of how all the children in the program interact with one another. They treat each other like family. They care about each other on and off the court. We’re building lifelong bonds! What sets me apart is being genuine and transparent. I truly have a passion and love for the youth as well as the game of basketball. I care! I make sure to communicate extremely well with both, players and parents. Also, checking in on school work and anything else they may have going on in life.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In 5-10 years, I see youth basketball getting bigger and even more popular. I see more teams being created and new organizations being birthed. My hope is that this will spark new positive opportunities for our youth in a way that helps build confidence, character, and I.Q. I know programs like ours are instilling core values and I would like to think we’re encouraging others to do the same.
