Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonnie Morgan
Hi Jonnie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Clearwater, FL, where the beach was my escape. That laid-back environment shaped not just my music but my outlook on life—introspective, easygoing, and deeply personal. Music was never my plan. In high school, I saved up for a surfboard but, on a whim, bought a Martin Dx-1 guitar instead. I had no idea that decision would shape my future.
Once at UCF, I majored in Economics, thinking it was a solid career path. Singing songs was just a fun way to connect with people. But everything shifted when I wrote Saranade, a song about a high school romance. The response was overwhelming, and for the first time, I realized the power of songwriting—it wasn’t just about me, it was about connection. That realization fueled my passion.
From there, I poured myself into music, forming a seven-piece band and touring the Southeast, opening for legends like Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, and Morgan Wallen. In 2017, I was encouraged to enter JBL’s Eon One Songwriting Contest, judged by legendary producer, Quincy Jones. I hesitated but submitted a song I wrote during my wife’s second battle with breast cancer (she’s currently 4.5 years cancer free!!!) — a love letter to God in a moment of doubt. That song won, and I recorded in LA, thinking I had finally “made it.” But what I learned was that success isn’t a destination—it’s a journey.
As life shifted, my bandmates started families, and burnout crept in. In early 2020, I stepped away from music, trying to chase stability. But after 18 months, I felt empty. Music wasn’t just something I did—it was part of who I was. I slowly found my way back, co-managing Cowboy Bebop Live and writing again, realizing my true calling wasn’t just making music—it was using my experiences to inspire others.
Now, I’m working on Anchors (out Fall ‘25), an album that reflects the highs and lows that shaped me. I’ve realized my purpose is bigger than just songs—it’s about reminding people to chase their dreams, push past fear, and live fully. My song Live Before I Die embodies that message, and I hope it inspires others to take risks and embrace life.
Every step of my journey—every struggle, every triumph—has led me to this: using music to uplift and inspire.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe that if life were a smooth road, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to grow. Every challenge I’ve faced has shaped me into the person I am today, strengthening not just my music but my purpose—to inspire others through my experiences.
One of my first major hurdles was getting into the Florida Music Festival. It was the festival to play, but I didn’t make the cut my first year. Instead of giving up, I used that setback as fuel. The following year, I was determined to prove myself. I competed against 40 bands for a headlining spot and won. That experience taught me the power of persistence and hard work—lessons I carry with me to this day.
Another defining moment was winning the JBL nationwide songwriting contest. Once I made it into the Top 10, it became a public vote on YouTube. For two weeks straight, I barely saw my wife because I was doing everything I could—social media, articles, outreach—to rally support. It was exhausting but showed me how much effort and belief it takes to turn dreams into reality.
But the biggest challenge has been personal—my wife’s battle with breast cancer, not once, but three times. Today, she is cancer-free, but walking that journey with her completely reshaped my perspective on life. It reminded me how precious our time is and why we should never take our dreams for granted. That’s why I write music—to encourage others to chase what sets their souls on fire, because we only get one shot at this life.
Every struggle has reinforced my purpose. It’s not just about making music—it’s about using it to uplift, encourage, and remind people that no matter what they face, they have the strength to keep going.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At my core, I’m an artist—a singer-songwriter who believes in the power of music to connect, heal, and inspire. Beyond that, I also co-manage Cowboy Bebop Live and have had my songs featured on MTV. I love writing music that moves people, whether it’s deeply personal songs or catchy jingles for companies.
But the moments I’m most proud of aren’t the accolades—they’re the times when someone comes up to me after a show to share how a song changed their life. Those conversations remind me why I do this. Music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a way to uplift, to remind people they’re not alone, and to inspire them to chase their own dreams. That’s what fuels me.
What sets me apart is my blend of artistry and business acumen. Talent alone isn’t enough in this industry—it takes strategy, marketing, and a deep understanding of how to build something sustainable. My background in business has helped me navigate this world, and I want to show others that success isn’t just about luck; it’s about perseverance, learning the game, and never losing sight of your purpose.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Anything that is inspiring I love listening to or watching. Whether it’s a podcast with Jordan Peterson, a great book like Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog, or watching an incredible movie that’s based off a true story. All of these help me realize there are people out there everyday, building their dreams and taking people with them on their journey.
