Conversations with Kahli Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahli Schultz.

Hi Kahli, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from nursing school in August 2019 and started my first nursing job on an adult PCU/stepdown floor. COVID started running rampant and changed everything in March. It was a tough time and almost made me quit nursing. The abuse, death, and unsafe working conditions we had to deal with really put me in a bad place. I found a job listing on our site for a Pediatric ICU position and applied immediately. After shadowing the unit and talking to the manager, I landed my dream job! I eventually began precepting new hires, joined our shared governance and unit councils, and loved my job again. We had a crazy year in 2021 and saw a lot- I took the skills I learned and jumped into travel nursing. As a PICU travel nurse, I have been to Texas, Pennsylvania, and California and will be heading to Washington next year. I wanted to help my community in a different way when I came home from contracts and started with Mobile IV Nurses as a nurse contractor. I love it! I visit people in their homes (or wherever) and help them feel better with IV hydration and sometimes medications. It allows me so much flexibility in my life, and I get to spend more time with my husband and dogs than I ever did working as a staff nurse in the area.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
COVID-19 was a real challenge in 2020. We saw remarkable things in healthcare! We also saw the backlash after the COVID-19 peak ended, and the public changed their perception of nursing. Administrations of hospitals completely took advantage of nurses, and many of us left permanent positions to travel or nonbedside positions. During my first year as a pediatric ICU nurse, I saw a lot more death than I ever had before, and with that came PTSD and a lot of healing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am a nurse contractor with Mobile IV Nurses here in Florida, specifically in the Orlando area. I bring affordable IV hydration therapy to people when and where they need it; we treat migraines, hangovers, flu/cold symptoms, stomach bugs, COVID-19 symptoms, etc. I am also still a Pediatric ICU travel nurse from time to time and will be starting a new contract in Washington this upcoming January! I am proud of my resilience during the chaos I experienced in healthcare since the start of my career; even when I wanted to quit, I didn’t. My ability to connect with everyone and make them feel better on their worst day sets me apart from others. It’s a skill not quickly gained, and anyone in my care can confirm they feel the love!

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lessons I have learned are never giving up and taking care of yourself. You have to take care of yourself first before you can take care of anyone adequately, and it’s something we all so easily forget. Never giving up just means never giving up on yourself. You always have yourself, so you can’t give up on yourself.
