Conversations with Kyra Graham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Graham.

Hi Kyra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started baking bread on January first of 2021 because I’d heard of an old wives tale where if you start the new year doing something you enjoy, you’ll incorporate it into your everyday life. I don’t remember the exact details of it all but it proved to be true for me! I started baking bread for dinner, then started giving bread to my family. In March of 2022, I started my own business with the help of my mother. Without her, I never would have taken the leap necessary to start this new journey in my life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The whole process of getting where I am now, from figuring out different temperatures and baking times to studying different proofing methods and different recipes was lengthy, but educational nonetheless. Thankfully, bread can be very forgiving and while some loaves might not have been very pretty, they at least tasted good!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Outside of my weekday job as a work-from-home beauty advisor for Sephora, I bake lots of bread and other baked goods in addition to taking care of my daughter! I love to do cookies, cinnamon rolls, and various breads, but my absolute favorite bread to make is my flax seed and rye sourdough loaf. It’s a 24-hour process, but the end result is so rewarding. I like to test my recipes out by having my husband and daughter do the taste testing for me, and so far, the best sourdough loaves I’ve done have been the flaxseed and rye loaves, you know they’re good if they’re baby approved! I feel that one thing that truly sets me apart from others is that I absolutely love to bake and I always make sure my product is the best it can be before taking it to the public to sell. It brings me so much joy to not only create such delicious food but to see and hear about how much people enjoy it. In that regard, I truly do consider myself to be a people pleaser.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporters throughout this journey have been my husband, Daniel, my mother, Heather, and my two best friends, Hollister and Maija. My husband and Hollister have always loved my food and supported me in wanting to do something with that, and then my other friend Maija showed me that you can start a business from the ground up and be successful. My mother was the one who truly pushed me to put myself out there and start my bread business, and she was also the one to help me come up with the name Half Baked Bread Co. Without all of these wonderful people in my life, I surely would not be where I am right now.
