Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Robinson.
Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve had stories in me, and a handful of scattered seeds took root in my imagination and grew into ‘The Boy who Saw in Colours.’
As a child, I suffered from various mental health problems, so writing was an escape from the real world and a way to create a world entirely my own.
In the writing of my debut novel, I was genuinely carrying around some rocks. Just the same way the children in my novel carry around their great symbolic kind of rock that I was carrying around the rocks as well. I had to let go of them to be able to write about someone like Josef, the main character of my story. So, writing has changed me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are many obstacles to jump over on the road to writing a novel and even more when you try to publish it. In writing historical fiction, there are many famous and amazing novels to live up to, so to speak, so I was always very conscious of what was expected of someone trying to dabble in writing novels. Then, there are the negative opinions people have when speaking about self-publishing and how so many people are out there trying to take advantage of first-time authors who don’t know any better. I learned to think of these things as part of the road rather than an obstacle I must stop at and try to tackle. I just move on.
I thought if I can just write those characters as strong as possible, and just invest them with all my heart, then maybe people who are expecting these things will go, “Hang on. I really enjoy these characters and this story” and see past everything else.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I find it difficult to express myself verbally, and writing and art have always been something I’ve used as a crutch to help others understand me.
