Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyma Dunbar.
Hi Lyma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am the host and creator of a Saturday midday radio talk show called The Peoples Chat Room which is now in its eight year. We started out on 1220am Radio, then transitioned to iChunesradio.com around our third year, because I felt it would open us up to a larger audience. We now rebroadcast on two additional stations, Socapassiontx.com and islandbeatradio.net. Being on iChunesradio, which is owned by Michael Arjoon, I was then given the opportunity to be the Editor in chief of a new quarterly digital magazine that he and Wilfred Hercules were about to launch. I decided it would be a great opportunity to share the music and culture of the Caribbean through the eyes and words of our contributing writers while simultaneously featuring some of the biggest names in Caribbean music such as Julian Marley, Morgan Heritage, and Teddyson John on our Covers, with accompanying articles that shared their perspective on music, and life in general. iChunes Entertainment Magazine is now in its fifth year.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. My challenges have been finding advertisers and trying to stay on schedule with getting the magazine completed on time, which also includes completing the interviews with the featured Cover for that issue, assisting with the layout and the final edits prior to upload. All this while maintaining the weekly radio show, with responsibilities that include weekly social media promotions, scheduling guests, completing some research depending on the guest, while maintaining a daily full-time profession five days a week, and my most important role, the mother of three male young adults.
Honestly, I am still learning lessons because life is the ultimate daily teacher. I’ve learned that my mother was correct when she sang an almost monthly song, “No man is an island.” We need each other in this worldwide community, and we should do our best to look out for each other and lend a helping hand, when we identify there is a need. I think that your magazine “Orlando Voyager” plays an important part towards that purpose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago, where I started singing professionally at the age of 16. I joined one of our big bands on the island, and later after migrating to the U.S, opened Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort as a soloist/guitarist. My group performed for about three years at EPCOT Center on the Junkanoo Bus, where I started singing in four languages English, Portuguese, Spanish and Creole to add to the fun experience of the guests visiting the theme park, particularly the Brazilians. When the Bob Marley Club opened at Universal Studios, I performed there for about two years as well as multiple locations around Central Florida for over ten years. I have a BS in Marketing and Communications, and a Master’s in social work.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
This is a difficult one…. I can’t think of anything except to say that for my inner circle, which is very small, many people do not know how my life intersects with music, my background as a therapist, my 3 sons, my family, and my talk show. I’m not good at letting people in. Some know of me playing one of those roles individually however they are unaware of the whole, because I do not share that information, unless asked a direct question. I guess this article is kind of like my big reveal.
