Conversations with Makeda Theodule

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makeda Theodule.

Hi Makeda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I learned to crochet when I was about three years old from my mom who was a homemaker. I used to make simple items such as hats and washcloths with her guidance. Throughout my lifetime, I would always crochet little items and give them away as gifts or even wear them myself. When my daughter was a baby, I started to make little outfits for her. She would model little swimsuit sets or little skirt sets with the hat and the booties or sandals to match. I then started giving away baby items at baby showers which always turned into the crowd favorite. That, of course, led to me getting orders for crocheted items such as baby blankets, baby booties, swimsuits, stuffed animals, adult outfits, baby dresses, socks, etc. That’s how CroChic Couture was established, from the customers placing so many orders and pretty much forcing me to create a business! The name CroChic Couture was derived from “Cro” which is short for Crochet; “Chic” which is defined as elegant and stylishly fashionable; Couture represents items that are custom-made to order.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me is trying to run a one-woman show. I have so many new, innovative ideas to grow the business, but I don’t have a team of crochet experts. Sometimes the orders come in faster than my hands can make them, which forces me to have to turn customers away.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a crochet designer specializing in hand-made, custom-made crochet apparel and accessories. I am known for my creative styles, vibrant color combinations, attention to detail and chic styles. My most popular pieces include baby girls and baby boys outfits as well as unique adult swimsuit designs. Since I specialize in making quality, one-of-a kind pieces, all items can be handed down for generations and used as family heirlooms.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My late mother was my mentor and I am now able to mentor my daughter who is now interested in learning the craft. I also take pride in knowing that I can teach the art of crochet to seniors who are then able to share the art of crochet with their grandchildren and loved ones. Outside of family members, there are many social media groups catered to the crochet community where there are experts offering guidance and mentorship.
