Today we’d like to introduce you to Makenzie Oliver
Hi Makenzie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Makenzie Oliver – Founder and Director of Lighthouse Learning Microschool & Homeschool Hybrid
Lighthouse Learning began as a dream placed on my heart—a vision for a school where children could learn authentically, joyfully, and without limitations. With years of experience as an educator, leadership in administration, and recognition as Heartland’s Best Teacher in Missouri and Teacher of the Year in Florida, I was deeply committed to public education. Yet, despite my passion for teaching, I felt a calling toward something different—something more meaningful.
In 2020, I took a leap of faith. I started Lighthouse Learning right in my living room with just a handful of students, determined to build an educational environment that truly honored the individual needs of every child. From the very beginning, Lighthouse Learning was designed to be more than just a school—it was meant to be a home for families searching for a nurturing, faith-infused, and personalized learning experience.
Unlike traditional top-down education models, Lighthouse Learning was built from the ground up, focusing on the strengths, passions, and potential of each student. Small class sizes fostered collaboration, self-paced learning encouraged mastery, and our unique hybrid model allowed families the flexibility to be deeply involved in their children’s education. Our mission has always been clear: to create a faith-centered, family-oriented, and future-focused learning experience that empowers students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
The journey has not been without its challenges, but every step—every obstacle overcome—has been a testament to God’s provision and the unwavering dedication of our community. What started as a small group in my home has now grown into a thriving microschool with 80 students and a waitlist.
As Lighthouse Learning expanded, so did the need for leadership and support. It was then that my husband, Jamel, stepped in to help carry this vision forward. Together, we continue to build a place where children feel safe, inspired, and eager to learn, where families are deeply connected, and where education is not just about academics—but about shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.
Lighthouse Learning is more than a school. It is a movement, a family, and a light in the world of education.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growth often comes with challenges, and Lighthouse Learning is no exception. However, every struggle has reinforced our resilience and faith in the mission.
When I first started Lighthouse Learning, it was in my living room—a small, intimate setting where a handful of students gathered around my kitchen table to learn in a way that felt natural, engaging, and tailored to their needs. As word spread and more families sought this unique educational experience, we quickly outgrew that space.
Our next move was into a strip mall, a step forward that allowed us to expand but also came with unforeseen obstacles. One of the biggest trials we faced was a sudden flood that completely disrupted our space. In what could have been a devastating setback, we instead witnessed an incredible provision. Within a single day—without skipping a beat—we relocated to a beautiful ministry and building in Altamonte Springs. It was nothing short of miraculous. Our students, families, and staff made a seamless transition, and Lighthouse Learning continued without interruption, further proving that this school was built on faith, determination, and an unwavering commitment to its mission.
The demand for what we offer has been immense. Families are seeking alternatives to traditional schooling, and Lighthouse Learning has become a beacon of hope for those wanting a more personalized, flexible, and nurturing educational experience. With every challenge, we’ve not only grown stronger but also solidified our belief that Lighthouse Learning is filling a critical gap in education.
Though the road hasn’t been smooth, it has been undeniably purposeful. Every obstacle has led to greater opportunities, and every challenge has strengthened our vision. Today, we continue to grow, thrive, and remain committed to providing a learning environment where children and families can flourish.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Lighthouse Learning, we are more than just a school—we are a movement designed to transform the way children learn. Our vision is to equip students with a pathway that encourages their gifts, talents, and passions, preparing them for success in entrepreneurship, trade school, or college readiness. We recognize that every child is unique, and instead of forcing students into a one-size-fits-all model, we cultivate an environment where they can discover their strengths, explore their interests, and develop real-world skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
What We Do & Specialize In
Lighthouse Learning offers a microschool and homeschool hybrid experience that blends structure with flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace while engaging in hands-on, meaningful education. Our specialized approach ensures that each student is nurtured academically, socially, and emotionally while gaining confidence in their own learning journey.
We have developed a 4-Stage Learning Model that supports students at every level of growth:
1️⃣ K-4 (LightKeepers):
A foundation built on strong academics, creative learning, and hands-on exploration.
Students learn through project-based experiences that encourage curiosity and engagement.
Enrichment opportunities include STEAM, life skills, nature-based learning, and cooking.
2️⃣ 5-6 (Bridge Builders):
A transition period where students begin setting personal academic goals and working on independent projects.
Introduction to entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
Adaptive learning programs ensure that students are both challenged and supported in their unique learning paths.
3️⃣ 7-8 (Pathfinders – Upper School):
Preparation for high school and beyond with a focus on critical thinking and leadership skills.
Deeper engagement in entrepreneurship, real-world business planning, and mentorship.
Dual enrollment readiness, study strategies, and time management are introduced.
4️⃣ Beyond Middle School – The Future Pathway
Students are prepared for college, trade school, or launching their own businesses.
We encourage exploration of apprenticeships, internships, and mentorships with professionals in their chosen fields.
Students are equipped with a growth mindset and real-world skills that help them thrive in any path they choose.
What Sets Us Apart?
Lighthouse Learning isn’t just about academics—it’s about developing well-rounded, confident, and passionate learners. We prioritize:
✅ Small Class Sizes: Every child is truly seen, heard, and understood.
✅ Personalized Learning Plans: We meet students where they are, providing self-paced, mastery-based learning.
✅ Faith-Infused Environment: While not a religious school, we encourage character development and values.
✅ Entrepreneurial Mindset: We teach students to think outside the box, solve problems, and take ownership of their learning.
✅ Enrichment & Hands-On Learning: Our programs include STEAM, life skills, passion projects, business skills, nature-based learning, and community involvement.
What We Are Most Proud Of
The greatest reward is hearing students say, “I love school, and I never want to leave.”
At Lighthouse Learning, school is not something students have to do—it’s something they love to do. Seeing children who were once frustrated with learning become excited, engaged, and confident in their abilities is the heart of what we do.
Parents regularly share tear-jerking testimonials about how their child has grown—students who once dreaded school are now thriving, making friends, and discovering a love for learning they never thought possible. Our families feel supported, our students feel empowered, and our community continues to grow because of the impact we are making.
Lighthouse Learning is more than a school. It’s a launchpad for future leaders, innovators, and changemakers. We are incredibly proud of the work we do, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for our students and families!
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating a place where children love learning, feel valued, and thrive in an environment designed for their success—not just academically, but emotionally, socially, and spiritually.
At Lighthouse Learning, I have seen firsthand what happens when children are given the freedom to explore their passions, the support to grow in confidence, and the encouragement to dream big. When students wake up excited to come to school and leave at the end of the day wanting to stay longer, I know we are doing something truly special.
Why does this matter so much?
Because I believe that education should be a gift, not a burden. Too many children have felt unseen, frustrated, or boxed into a system that doesn’t work for them. When I see a child who once struggled now thriving, when I hear a parent say, “My child loves learning again”—that is the greatest reward.
What also matters deeply to me is family and community. At Lighthouse Learning, we don’t just educate students—we partner with parents to ensure every child’s needs are met. I want parents to feel heard, supported, and empowered in their child’s education. Watching families grow together through this experience is something I treasure.
Lastly, faith and purpose drive everything I do. This school wasn’t just an idea—it was a calling. I’ve seen doors open, miracles happen, and lives change in ways I never could have imagined. I believe every child has God-given gifts and talents that deserve to be nurtured, and I am honored to create a space where they can flourish.
At the end of the day, what matters most is impact. If a child walks away from Lighthouse Learning knowing they are capable, confident, and ready to take on the world, then we have done our job.
That is why I do what I do. And that is why I will keep fighting for a better way for children to learn, grow, and shine. ✨
