Today we’d like to introduce you to Mami Koyama.
Hi Mami, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Japan. I have been in US since 2012. I have an experience for makeup job in Japan.
We moved to NJ in March 2012 because of my husband’s job. We just started new life with my two years old son.
Life in foreign country had language barrier, but every day was very exciting.
I was able to meet many people. They are positive and never forget the challenges.
I always thought I wanted to try something. I want to be something.
I’m always “wife”. I’m always “mom”.
It’s so happy. But I wanted to be something more “special”. I wanted to help someone.
Then I tried to go to Cosmetology school in US.
It was a very big challenge for me.
I went to school for weekdays, and I picked my kids up after school as soon as possible.
And I cooked dinner for my family, and I studied a lot at home.
I worked for weekend at the hair salon. I learned hair techniques from my co-worker.
I couldn’t get day off a couple of years. And we couldn’t get family’s help. Because our all family in Japan.
It was very tough day actually. But I felt happy cause I could go forward by step and step.
After graduated school, I passed state license exam.
I couldn’t imagine I could get cosmetology license in US when I came to here.
Then we moved to Orlando since March 2020.
It was in emergency order in Florida because of COVID 19.
I know everyone was difficult to get haircut during 2020.
I thought I wanted to open a private salon. Because I want all my clients to feel comfortable.
Then I opened my private salon in August 2020.
It is still big challenge. But I feel so much fun because these are all new things!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was not smooth. Language problem is my big concern. I felt often get nervous. And I got some mistakes when I go to beauty school.
Sometimes I didn’t understand anything!
But I have many friends. They all are very kind and helped me.
I never forget their kindness.
They supported me.
And my family also supported me.
My husband always gave me power!
So I could go forward.
And my son and daughter gave me smiling always!
I’m feeling so happy anytime.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist and makeup artist. I usually do haircuts, hair colors, hair treatments, and hair straights. What I pay particular attention to is to minimize damage to your hair. In addition, it is to remove the damage of the hair and make it more beautiful. Recently, I have been particularly focusing on special treatments made in Japan. It arranges the bonds of the hair and gives it a shine.
I would like to continue to help protect my client’s hair from the strong sunlight and humidity of Florida and make it more beautiful.
