Conversations with Mark Dalton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Dalton.

Hi Mark, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my interest in photograph while in Jr, high school leaning how to shoot pictures and develop film in the audio-visual lab. Years later, I began creating marine related images such as light houses and various ocean buoys and was able to sell quite a few images.

Later I also worked in the crime scene field and further developed my skills by taking various photographic classes that were put on by FBI instructors.

I joined the Deltona Fire Department in 2004, and they put my skills to use taking departmental portraits of our fire fighters. These images were used for various reasons such as promotion announcements and articles in various trade magazines. I just retired earlier this month after nearly 21 years of service.

During this time, I also worked for several magazines writing articles and taking my own photographs, I will list them below.

I also do quite a bit of portrait, classic cars, motorcycles and school sport photography such as baseball and basketball.

Classic Farm and Tractor – multiple covers and articles
Antique Power – multiple articles
Vintage Fire Trucks and Equipment – One cover, multiple articles
Heritage Iron – tractors
Vintage Truck – antique pick-up trucks, several articles and a cover
Various Fire Fighting Trade magazines

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been somewhat smooth. The only challenges have been getting my name out there to gain new clients as well as upgrading my equipment which is a never-ending endeavor.

The most important challenge that I face as a photographer is being able to learn new concepts in creating images and not being afraid to step out of the box and experiment. This helps my creativity immensely and just makes my images that much better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently I have several genres that I concentrate on. Portrait photography is something that I really enjoy, I am now beginning to make a name for myself and what sets me apart is my creative style. Whether it’s a single person, a brand or a band I am able to focus on bringing out something in the image that creates their unique personality. That too is what I am most proud of. I really enjoy the challenge and seeing the look on a client’s face after presenting them with their images is what pushes me on to always improving the final product.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up in south Florida, specifically Fort Lauderdale, I was somewhat quiet but was always comfortable around people, yet I was also quite comfortable with my own company. As a young boy I enjoyed riding horses, sports, especially baseball and in high school I discovered rodeo which led me to working on farms and eventually becoming a farrier.

But in hindsight I always had a desire to help people and that’s what led to my career in the fire service which spanned nearly 35 years as a Fire Fighter and EMT.
