Conversations with Monique Chapelle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Chapelle.

Hi Monique, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
It started in my grandmother’s sewing room. I was watching her make these beautiful quilts. I loved watching her sew and make something from scratch. When my daughter needed a tutu, I began to use my sewing skills. With the help of youtube University and what I learned from my Nan, I made the cutest tutu. Then her friends wanted one; then others wanted one. Once tutus were mastered, I moved on to skirts, dresses, pants, and shirts. I love colors and prints, so naturally, I was drawn to Ankara/African prints. I also love making upcycled outfits and bags using chip or candy bags and other recycled materials.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
No. It has been a challenging road. I started from nothing. I built my inventory and business from the bottom. It’s been a struggle to elevate due to a lack of funding. But I have made do with what I have and have learned to turn curtains into something amazing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Well. I’m Monique Chapelle. Owner, creator, and upcycling expert for MoEts Goodies and Gifts. MoEts Goodies and Gifts is a one-stop shop. I offer custom outfits for any occasion, alterations accessories, African/Ankara print outfits, headwraps, waist beads, custom Gifts, resin art, books, incense and oils, upcycled items, and natural products. I also customize gift baskets just for your special someone. I use my creativity to make special items. Suppose you need a custom gift or outfit. The sky’s the limit.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
I call it stepping outside my box. It was when I made my first upcycled dress out of Cheeto bags for earth day. I had yet to learn how I was going to implement the design. I just started, and a few bags later made a cute 2 piece.
