Today we’d like to introduce you to Pedro Martinez.
Hi Pedro , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was about 14 years old, My uncle and I decided to get some haircuts. When we went to the mall we did not have enough money to afford it. We then decided to buy some clippers and give each other haircuts. The haircut my uncle gave me was very bad and the one I gave him was pretty good. That same day I did like 2 more of my friends. What a fun day it was, even though the haircut I had received by my uncle was a disaster. I was happy because I was able to perform well on my friend’s hair. This was something I really enjoy doing. I then proceeded to cut hair on my front porch until I was old enough to go to Barber school. I eventually went from cutting hair on my front porch to owning 2 barbershops. Throughout my life I have also worked in other businesses with an entrepreneur mindset but my main thing has been barbering. Barbering is my passion. It’s something I do because I love and have never felt like a job, It feels like it is a part of me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Doing what you like to do and running a business are 2 different things. On the business side, finding the right location for your business can be challenging. Additional to that you as a small business owner have to compete with big franchises that have the resources for things like big advertisements. As an independent contractor or self-employed starting your own clientele can also be challenging. It is also a very physical job, that means a lot of standing hours and forcing your vision. You also have to have consistency and discipline since most of the time you don’t have a boss controlling you. Some barbers tend to get laid back and decrease their performance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Over the years my main specialty has been haircuts and shaves. Coming from Puerto Rico where the culture is very diverse I have learned and specialize in all types of hair. I have also been known for offering top of the line customer service. I always make sure everyone is welcome and everyone is satisfied. I am very proud of what I do not just for the service I provide and because I can talk to my customers with honesty and clarity and on occasion I am able to give them good advice. I believe the passion that I have for what I do is what sets me apart from the competition.
What were you like growing up?
While I was growing up I was the kid that always wanted to help out and trying to make money. I worked cutting hair, washing grass and mowing lawns.
