Conversations with Quin Brewington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quin Brewington.

Hi Quin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m the founder of the SisterLadyGirl blog, The Second Act Summit virtual conference and The Second Act Summit Society Facebook community.

I think it was around my mid-40s when the feelings of anxiety, exhaustion and hopelessness started setting in. I hadn’t come anywhere close to achieving what I thought I would have by that age, and I felt like I was wasting my life. I was numb; struggling to see the point of it all, and nothing seemed to help.

The fact that my life looked good (close-knit family, steady job, cool car, beautiful home) only amplified the problem. To the casual observer, I was killin’ it! I was “hashtag goals.” I had no business feeling miserable, which made me feel even more miserable!

I discovered much later that what was happening to me wasn’t unusual. It was happening to millions of other middle-aged women, too. Like me, they all followed society’s script that said get a good job, find a good man and have some great kids if we wanted to live happily ever after. Like me, they all ended up feeling disappointed, too.

I didn’t want to keep going that way — existing instead of living. I knew deep down that I wanted my time on this earth to have more meaning.

I decided to figure out how to make the next phase of my life the best phase of my life, so I created The Second Act Summit which gives voice to the struggles, strengths, weaknesses and wisdom of women over 40 who have unapologetically declared — This is their time.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road getting to this point in my journey. But, growth is painful. One of the biggest challenges I faced when I turned 40 was answering the question, “What comes next?” The answer isn’t easy because society hasn’t always been kind to “women of a certain age.” That’s why it’s become my life’s mission to change the narrative about women in midlife.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a writer my entire career. One of the things I’m most proud of is earning my Master’s degree in Communications from The Newhouse School at Syracuse University at the age of 51. As intimidating as it was to go back into the classroom at such an advanced age, I knew it would help me as I contemplated launching my platform to reach other women over 40 with actual and actionable tools and resources to help them navigate the road to midlife with more peace and ease. In the last couple of years, I’ve been able to build a community of thousands of women in midlife who want their next phase to be their best phase. The response has been amazing — over 500 women registered for the inaugural virtual conference. I’m excited to continue learning and growing.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I always say that nobody does it alone. I’ve been lucky enough to have a few incredible mentors who really believe in my mission and have selflessly given their time, talent and energy to help me get to the next level. I also like to think of myself as a lifelong learner. I’m drawn to people who know more than I do and are willing to share.
