Conversations with Randi Olsen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randi Olsen.

Hi Randi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Live Oak Theatre was founded in the fall of 2009. The mission has always been and continues to be to enrich families by providing a wholesome, family-friendly theater experience. Whether that means families attending a show or performing together in one onstage, Live Oak Theatre exists to provide affordable and edifying entertainment and educational opportunities for theatre-lovers and participants of all ages.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a non-profit in a small town will always have its challenges. We are fortunate to have the backing of a community that has brought us many talented performers and loving patrons. As anybody that has been part of a theatrical production crew knows, putting on a production can sometimes feel like building a plane as it’s taking off: with the right crew and some elbow grease, it’ll feel like it’s been together the whole time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The most comments we get after shows are complimenting the acting of the children. One of our specialties is working with the younger performers of productions to ensure they understand the basic fundamentals of acting and character creation and development. As long as you’re in character, all other aspects of a show can come easier to a performer.

We strive for excellence in all aspects of production from costumes and sets to the major harmonies and dazzling group numbers. What sets us apart is that we perform family-friendly plays and musicals throughout our season as a way to include performers of all ages. One of our main goals as a company is to encourage the mentorship between experienced performers and newcomers on and off the stage.

What’s next?
A big part of the future that we see is to develop a publishing branch of Live Oak. This falls in line with our mission of mentoring young creatives to pursue storytelling opportunities in every facet.
