Today we’d like to introduce you to Rubí Lopez
Hi Rubí, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Believe it or not- my journey started with YouTube! I started consuming birth content while I was in college. What began as me watching “labor and delivery vlogs” led me down a rabbit hole and I was exposed to women giving birth in all different contexts – in birth centers, at home, an even unassisted. These videos exposed me to entirely different narrative on birth and I was hookeeed. I found that the women in my life who shared their birth stories often used words like “scary” or “painful” but the women in these videos were really informed on the birth process and found labor incredibly empowering. This expansion of what birth is like was the beginning of it all for me.
After a few years of consuming this context, I decided to pursue my doula training. After that- I was done for. I knew that I had to pursue birth work full-time. Shortly after, I attended my first birth and brought my old high school camera with me. Documenting that birth brought everything together for me. Seeing the way the mom reacted towards the pictures was the last piece of the puzzle. The way she felt mirrored how I felt consuming birth content online- empowered! So I quit my job and a month later started documenting births full-time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Truthfully, it has been and I can’t take any credit. I was able to make connections with other birth workers fairly quickly and was doing this full-time pretty much since the inception of my business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a motherhood photographer. This means that I document a woman through the entire process- from pregnancy all the way to their baby’s newborn sessions. But my bread and butter is birth photography. I’m most passionate about documenting the birth process because I’ve witnessed how it changes the way a woman sees herself. And I believe that has ripples that can change today’s narrative of birth. We live in a culture where women are misinformed and quite fearful of the birth process and one way that can be dispelled is to highlight women’s real experiences in birth.
I would say I am most known for my birth films. It’s also a really full-circle moment because my content is now on YouTube- the very platform that started this journey for me. I get to be on the other side now and create videos that encourage other women the same way I was all those years ago.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Birth rockssss!!! Being a woman is rad!!!
