Conversations with Stephanie Barker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Barker.

Hi Stephanie , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started with my husband’s idea, by acquiring an established flower shop in late September of 2019. I never worked a day in my life in a flower shop or even a small business setting. The idea was built on hope and belief I would be good at it. 2020 was our first calendar year in business, like everyone else, that was a difficult year, and we just winged it. I was not able to deliver to funeral homes, hospitals, or any type of care facility. There were no other flower celebrations going on, no proms, homecoming, recital, or graduation or weddings. The goal for the first year was to keep the lights on and we would consider that a success. The silver lining I was able to see considering 2020 was my first year in business, was I did not miss what I did not know. Established shops , knew the revenue that certain occasions brought to them, I did not. So every year has only gotten better than the first.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, every year seemed to bring an obstacle. 2020 of course had its challenges, then 2021, and 20222, brought severe supply shortages to my line as many others. The glassware, my flowers, so much of my products come from other countries, and through the Panama Canal. So the following 2 years I saw a product increase, higher than what was the “norm”. (Keep in mind, this is still my first 3 years, I knew nothing different.) I got through these years; again with hoping for the best, and as long as I kept the light bill paid, then I am a success. The goal at this point was just not to go negative.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have drawn my whole life, for as long as I can remember I have always been good at art and creativity. The talent I was born with I put into my flowers. I pride myself in creating things that are not typically seen, i aspire to impress people with every creation, as well as treat everyone as I would want to be treated. I tell any customer of mine, “everything is made as if I was buying it myself, and I am pretty bougie, so the bar is already set high”. I put my heart into everything, and I believe that is what has allowed me to keep going, keeps me open and has allowed me to be acknowledged in the community.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I like Pintrest to look up different ideas, or trends.
