Conversations with Stephanie Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Smith.

Hi Stephanie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2022, I launched an Etsy shop, Coastal Vibes by Stephanie, as a heartfelt tribute to my best friend Amanda Butler—a talented artist, devoted mother and wife, and a deeply kind soul who passed away in 2020. Amanda, who studied art in college and had a deep love for the beach, was known for her creativity and generosity. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, she began making and giving away hand-decorated oyster shells as a way to lift spirits and spread joy to those around her.

After Amanda’s passing, I found myself drawn to the same artistic process, finding comfort and connection in creating oyster art alongside Amanda’s two young daughters. What began as a healing hobby soon grew into a mission: to continue Amanda’s legacy by spreading beauty, love, and joy through handmade art.

As I began leaving decorated oyster shells across the country in Amanda’s memory and gifting them to friends and family, I saw firsthand the happiness they sparked. Inspired by the response, I opened my Etsy shop—and within weeks, orders began coming in. Since then, Coastal Vibes by Stephanie has made over 550 sales, with shipments reaching as far as Europe and the Caribbean, including a large order to Turks and Caicos.

In the past two years, the business has blossomed beyond Etsy. I now sell pieces in several boutique stores and, as of early 2025, began showcasing work at artisan markets. What started as a tribute has grown into a thriving small business—one rooted in love, memory, and the coastal charm Amanda cherished.

“Everything I create is a way to carry on Amanda’s creativity,” Stephanie shares. “I know she would be proud of how far this has come. Each piece I make is filled with love and a passion for life, just like Amanda shared with all of us.”

At Coastal Vibes by Stephanie, every item is more than just a piece of art—it’s a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and the beauty that lives on when we create from the heart.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Balancing my full-time career as a licensed clinical social worker with running a small business has definitely been a learning curve. But through trial, error, and a lot of dedication, I’ve discovered strategies that help keep things running smoothly—like prepping shells in bulk and maintaining a productive, organized crafting space.

While the journey hasn’t always been easy, I’ve found effective solutions to most barriers and learned so much along the way. Every struggle has made me more efficient, more creative, and even more grateful for the work I get to do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I originally started by specializing in handmade oyster shell ring dishes, but over the years, my creative journey has expanded. A few years ago, I began making other small oyster-inspired products like wine stoppers, ornaments, and magnets.

In the past year, I’ve taken things a step further—venturing into larger wall art, especially pineapple pieces and unique oyster clusters for home décor. It’s been such a rewarding way to stretch my creativity and think outside the box.

Most recently, I’ve started incorporating pressed flowers into my art, and honestly, it’s become one of the designs I’m most proud of. Being able to offer one-of-a-kind, personalized pieces is what truly sets my work apart. Whether it’s a custom design or a new idea, I love bringing people’s visions to life. At this point, the creative possibilities feel endless—and that’s the best part.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
From local breweries and shops to festivals and events, there’s always something exciting happening in this vibrant town. What truly stands out, though, is the overwhelming support I’ve received—from neighbors, fellow small business owners, and the community as a whole.

A special shoutout to Magpies Modern General Store for being such a constant source of encouragement and collaboration. This kind of support is what small-town living is all about—uplifting one another, cheering each other on, and creating something special together.
